TBL Bowl Pick'em

Forget the piss poor picks made during our DWDW, DirtyWudders did pretty f'n well in the TheBigLead's Bowl Pick'em. Namesake finished 9th out of 500 (most correct picks) and Doc took home the crown beating Straight Butta by 4. Click here for the standings. (Group ID# 18584)

"The prize for the winner will be determined prior to the first bowl game, but it’s looking like straight cash, homie (probably $200) and, courtesy of a commenter, two tickets to an NBA game in your city."

I wonder if the Sixers still play...

That one is for you Dareaebs!

One Handed Grab

Check out this one handed grab from UCONN's Kashif Moore.

As Dr Saturday puts it
But the play of the day, and maybe of the bowl season so far, obviously belonged to Husky receiver Kashif Moore, an undersized sophomore made of syrup, tar and crazy glue:

No.14 PSU

Saturday’s game wasn’t pretty, but PSU came back from an early 10-0 deficit to defeat Indiana 31-20 at Beaver Stadium. The win, combined with losses from No.9 USC, No.14 Miami, No.15 Houston, No.16 Utah and No.17 Arizona, helped Penn State make the jump to No.14 in this week’s BCS standings, keeping hope alive for an at-large selection into one of the four BCS bowls, excluding the National Championship. PSU needs to finish in the top 14 in the final BCS standings on December 6th to qualify for a BCS bowl. The Lions play their final game of the season this Saturday at Michigan State, and following that game their fate will be largely decided by teams ahead of them. MSU is a tough road game to end the season on - hopefully JoePa has one more win in him for 2009.

BCS Standings:

Florida

2

Alabama

3

'Nova Wins Mayor's Cup

Kerry Kittles hit a 3-pointer over the out stretched hand of Mark Macon as time expired giving the Villanova Wildcats a 27-24 win on Thursday night at the Linc. Temple had a 10-0 lead at the half, thanks to John Chaney’s great match-up zone defense and a 75-yard scoring strike from Pepe Sanchez to Rasheed Brokenborough. A 3-pointer by Eric Eberz and a Alvin Williams to Zeffy Penn connection tied up the game at 24 late in the 4th, before Kerry Kittles clutch shot. .

Villanova, a 10-3 team last fall, entered this season ranked in the top five in 1AA, under 25th-year coach Andy Talley. Temple, coming off a 5-7 finish that gave the program its highest number of wins in 18 years, is beginning its fourth season under coach Al Golden with designs on claiming the MAC East Division championship.

Good Luck, Intern

A Billboard above Linebacker Inn is causing a stir in South Bend and indicates that Notre Dame's performance the last couple of years is not acceptable to all of the Irish faithful.

The billboard reads, “Best wishes to Charlie Weis in the 5th year of his college coaching internship. — Linebacker Alumni."

Weis has a 29-21 record, a .580 winning percentage that puts him behind Tyrone Willingham at 21-15 (.583) and Bob Davie at 35-25 (.583). Weis led the Irish to two BCS appearances in his first two years but that was with (mostly)Ty Willinghams players, such as Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzijia. The 15 losses in the last two years are the most in any two year stretch in the 120 year Notre Dame Football History. The recruits are still coming to South Bend but better results are expected.

Kirk Herbrstreit: Temple Will Win it All

Well, not quite. Kirk Herbstreit recently released his 9th Annual Herbie Awards for the upcoming season on ESPN.com, and in case you’re not familiar with the Herbies, they’re basically just a list of players, coaches and teams Herbstreit considers to be the best in the country. It was pretty much what I expected, lots of players from powerhouse schools in the south, but then I got to his picks for Conference Champions. I’ll be damned if Herbie doesn’t have your Temple Owls as his pick to win the much respected MAC East. I was surprised at first, but then took a look at who Al Golden and his boys’ competition is in the Mid Atlantic Conference East: Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami (OH) and Ohio. Wow. Temple’s schedule consists of one tough game, at Penn State, and other than that it’s a smattering of garbage I’m pretty sure my Thanksgiving Day pickup team could matchup with. In any case, I’ll be rooting for the Owls to do well this season, it’d be nice to see a college football team succeed in Philly, MAC East or not. Temple opens up the 2009 season Thursday night against Villanova at The Linc.

Other notable Herbie winners (notable to Dirty Wudders at least) after the jump:

Top DT: Jared Odrick (4), PSU

Top ILB: Sean Lee (3), PSU

Top OLB: Navorro Bowman (2), PSU

Players Who Don’t Get Enough Respect: Evan Royster (5), PSU

Head Coaches in Waiting: Tom Bradley (4), PSU

Best Student Sections: PSU (1) – Ed. Note: Nice.

Big 10 Conference Champ: PSU

Penn State kicks off the season this Saturday against the Akron Zips, more to come on the Lions later in the week.

PSU to Play at FedEx in 2010

Penn State and Indiana announced today that the teams will meet at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C. on November 20th next season. It will be a home game for Indiana. This has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Why would IU want to play a "home" game in a city where their opponents have an enormous fan base?

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley said in a statement. "This game will provide a great chance for some of our players to play close to home and for our fans and the more than 40,000 Penn State alumni in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. to see the Nittany Lions play in person."

I guess Indiana could care less about giving up home-field advantage. I would be pretty pissed if I were a Hoosier football fan...not that Hoosier football fans exist or anything, I'm just saying. Whatever, I'll be there.

'Bama on Probation

The NCAA has placed 16 of Alabama's athletic teams on 3 years probation for misuse of free text books. 201 student athletes used their scholarships to get free text books for other students, the University was also found guilty of "failure to monitor". The University was ordered to pay a $43,900 fine.

Something tells me the cost of textbooks is about to go up...

The Birmingham News is reporting that 'Bama's football team will have to forfeit at least 10 victories between '05 and '07. The University has said none of the textbooks or materials were used for profit or to get items not related to academics, and that the athletes involved who still have eligibility remaining have had to pay restitution.

Coach Nick Saban has to learn to follow John Calipari's lead and get the hell out of there before he gets caught. Truth is that as long as they don't lose scholarships or bowl eligibility, it is basically a slap on the wrist.
