Top Moments of 2009

May 19th 2009. DirtyWudders Kicks off with Namesakes "Game On" post. Over 660 posts later we are finished with 2009. Happy New Year. Re-post of our inaugural post, after the jump.

Game On

Welcome to Dirty Wudders, the sports blog dedicated to all things sports - Philadelphia sports in particular. This site is the aftermath of hundreds of arguments and debates over the years surrounding the four major Philly sports teams and their players. We here at Dirty Wudders are determined to answer the questions that have been plaguing the Philly faithful for years: Better WS Team, 1980 or 2008? Better QB, Cunningham or McNabb? Fruitier Met infielder, David Wright or Jose Reyes? These are the questions being asked, and we are the maniacs attempting to answer them. The contributors at Dirty Wudders are die hard sports fans who enjoy nothing more than a good sports debate, and with that in mind our primary goal is to share the anguish - and sometimes elation - that is being a sports fan in Philadelphia. Enjoy.

B-Dawk Thanks the Fans

In today’s Daily News, Brian Dawkins wrote a thank you letter to fans on the back page of the Eagles Playbook.  B-Dawk is a class act all the way, one of the best to ever put on an Eagles jersey and he will be missed for a long time. In case you missed the letter, here it is:

Dear Fans:

When I was leaving the Linc the other night I was rushed.  I was able to quickly say hello and thank you to many friends and their families, former teammates, and many others who have been a part of my life for many, many years.  I regret that I was unable to thank YOU from the bottom of my heart for all the love that you have shown me throughout the years.

I want you to know that the feeling is 100% mutual.  You welcomed me into your home, you welcomed me into you hearts.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, once again, for all the love that you have shown me and my family.

And, believe me, you will always have a special place in my heart until I leave God’s green Earth.

So thank you.

Love,

Brian Dawkins

Right back at you, Dawk.

Lions and Tigers

Penn State (10-2) heads into the Capital One Bowl against LSU (9-3) with (from what I can tell) a distinct advantage over the Tigers.  Offensively, PSU leads LSU in every major category, outgaining them in the air by almost 50 yards per game (238.9 to 180.1), and on the ground by over 40 (173.6 to 129.6). On the defensive side of the ball, PSU is ranked 10th nationally against the run (93.9 ypg), 8th overall (277.1) and allows the 4th fewest points per game (11.8). These stats are no doubt a product of the cupcake schedule the Lions endured, but impressive nonetheless.  Conversely, LSU ranks a paltry 108th in total offense (309.7 ypg) giving PSU fans hope that a bowl win could be in the cards.  I don’t claim to be an expert – just look at my DWDW record in college football – but all signs seem to point towards a PSU victory in this one.

Penn State is 1-3 in the Capital One Bowl, while LSU is 1-1, losing 30-25 in 2005 on a last-second touchdown pass in Nick Saban's final game as coach.

The last time these two teams met was a 16-9 Nittany Lions win in the 1974 Orange bowl, capping Joe Pa’s third of five unbeaten seasons.

Let’s go State!

Pro Bowl Rosters Picked Today

Pro Bowl rosters will be picked tonight at 7pm on the NFL Network. Which Eagles will make it? McNabb has had a good year but (probably) will not make it because Brees, Favre, Rodgers and Romo all have had as good or better years.

On Defense, Asante, Cole and Sheldon appear to have the best shot. Asante should be a lock due to his reputation and knack for the big play. He made it last year when he had an average year - this year he has 9 picks. Trent Cole has tied his career high with 12.5 sacks. Sheldon has had a good year but something tells me he will be over looked.

On Offense, Desean Jackson deserves to go but has some competition - Fitzgerald, Austin Miles, Sidney Rice and Steve Smith all have had good years. Jackson might go as a Special Teamer if he gets snubbed at WR. One of the 2 tackles might have a shot just because their are not too many good ones. I would vote Weaver because I cannot imagine another FB having as good a year. Then again, there are not too many FB's I could name...Does Kevin Turner still play? Jon Ritchie?

Akers also appears to have a good shot at kicker.

I think the birds will get 4 Pro Bowlers - Asante, Cole, Jackson and Akers with maybe McNabb being an alternate after Favre refuses to play. Am I missing anybody? No, you cannot predict Andy Reid as being the Coach after another NFC Championship loss.

Bay to the Mets

WFAN's Mike Francesa just announced that the Mets have signed Jason Bay pending a physical. Joel Sherman tweets that it is a 4 yr deal, which could be a 5 yr deal.

Here is what the NYPost's Mike Vaccaro thought of it when discussed a couple of weeks ago.

And that brings me around to this point: How many times do you need to have anvils fall on your head before you take a step out of the way? Which is to say, how many times do you have to sign Kevin Appier and Bobby Bonilla before you recognize the difference between attracting the cream of a good free-agent class (see Sabathia, CC, and Teixeira, Mark) and the prettiest homecoming queens of Homely High? And that's what the Mets would be doing here.

I think Bay is a good player who will help the Mets but they have MANY more holes to fill before I expect them to challenge the Braves and the Marlins for second place in the East.

Birds # 2

PFT has the Eagles #2 in this week's Power Rankings and tops in the NFC. Only San Diego is ahead of them. PFT has quickly fallen out of love with Indy, New Orleans and Minnesota. Dallas is the second highest NFC team, ranked # 4 and Minnesota has fallen to #8.

The Eagles have a HUGE game this weekend at Jerry's place with the division, as well as the Bye at stake. I think it is kind of crazy to drop Indy after backups blew a lead against the Jets.

Eagles-Broncos: The Return of #20

Honestly, I don't even give a sh*t that Brian Dawkins is coming back to the Linc. I loved him as an Eagle as much as the next guy, and he is obviously one of the greatest Eagles of all-time, but the fact of the matter is that he is on the Denver Broncos now. There is nothing we can do about it. Move on. With that said, it will be sweet to see him get a rousing ovation from the Philly crowd. More on the game after the jump.

The Broncos come into town 8-6 on the season and currently holding the wildcard playoff spot in the AFC. The Eagles sit at 10-4 with a playoff spot locked up and the #2 seed in their sights. The Broncos, once 6-0, have lost their last two games, including a 20-19 stinker to the Oakland Raiders. The Birds are sitting on a five-game winning streak, and their high powered offense has been impressive throughout the run. Doc and I disagree on this, but I don't feel like the Broncos offense will be able to keep up with the Eagles this week. I understand the Birds defense has shaky lately, but come on, Kyle Orton is Denver's QB. My prediction: Eagles 30 Broncos 13.

DWDW Pro Week 16 Edition

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this blog where the three contributors embarrass themselves picking the college and pro games of the week. Here are our picks for Sunday's games.

Doc's Picks

Dallas (9-5) at Washington (4-10) Line: Dal -7 O/U: 42

I'll be rooting for Washington tonight but last week's performance makes me think that the 'Skins have shut it down. Dallas forces a big game next week at Jerry's place.

Pick: Dal giving the points

Denver (8-6) at Philadelphia (10-4) Line: -7 O/U: 41.5

This line seems a little high against a desperate Denver team that MUST win. The birds have played well but have not beaten many winning teams thus far. The Eagles win on a late Akers FG.

Pick: Denver taking the points

Vick Gets Courage Award (?)

Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick, who joined the Eagles this season after serving 18 months in federal prison for his role in a dogfighting ring, has been named recipient of the team's Ed Block Courage Award.

Given annually, the award honors NFL players who exemplify commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. Recipients are selected in a vote by their teammates for team effort as well as individual performance. (ESPN)

It must be tough for Vick to bring in 1.6 million dollars, have a couple of TD's gift wrapped for him and for the most part do absolutely nothing positive on the field. But hey, he has courage.

Think this has anything to do with the Eagles trying to make him look good so other (desperate) teams may give something for him next year?

I hope so.

Rant from R.H.

Temple gave Seton Hall their first loss in Jersey the other night. In Jersey. Temple's my new favorite team in case you haven't noticed. This game was Sat. night at 7. I couldn't find it anywhere at all on TV. There was high school football on, but not this. Whatever. Good point by Jerardi, rematch of the 2000 Tournament game where Temple laid an egg and lost in OT. Ty Shine (pre- Eddie Griffin black eye) and Dalembert on SHU. Ugh, what a nightmare that was.
I was looking forward to Duke- Gonzaga at MSG, and only saw bits and pieces, but had to tune out quickly. Zags didn't show up. Duke is even more nauseating when up 30 in front of their shitbag fans. Jon Scheyer.....little p***y.

Nova gets Redding back, clean and sober hopefully. They needed him too. Needed his leadership and stability with all these young guards. Plus they'll need to him to win games with the Big East schedule coming up. I guess Syracuse is good, but I can't believe they're as good as they've looked so far. Jackson and Jardine-- Neumann connection. I still can't shake the fact that they lost to that DII team at the dome in a scrimmage.
Speaking of the Nova game, this from Mushnick in the Post:

* Villanova-Fordham, Saturday, on YES. A camera found a sweet picture of a kid, 9 or 10, holding ice cream. The kid gave the camera the finger. . .

Pretty funny, but sign of the times I guess with disrespectful punk kids. Don't get me started! Shades of Costanza with the ice cream on TV....

Drexel-Kentucky tonight at Rupp. Line is now at 58 and a half. I assume Bruiser and Calipari are buddies or something. Ick. Oh well, at least Drexel gets an ESPN game that doesn't start just before dawn. How bout Calipari, coming out and saying he "disagrees" with Knight, but nothing else? If you were innocent and someone said that about you, you would come back with guns blazing. But he knows what Knight said is true, and he has no comeback. Slimy fraud. I read an article about John Wall today. Towards the end there was a blurb that he was arrested in May for breaking and entering. Sounds like a nice kid. Maybe that's why Roy Williams didn't recruit him at all (and why Cal jumped on him) even though he played in his backyard.
St. Joe's held on to beat Lehigh at home. So, um, yeah.

I actually watched the second half of Sixers-Celtics Friday night--sans Iverson. Surprisingly entertaining and they actually played pretty well and won. Also, Sheed got tossed with two T's in the first half and had to be restrained by half the Celtics bench when he got tossed. What a complete stooge. Every time I think he's done amusing me with his childish, boorish behavior, he comes through with a stunt like that.
Anyway, this Speights guy looks really good. He should easily play the bulk of the minutes at center and Dalembert should be sent to Siberia or the wilds of his native Canada. I don't care how much he makes, let's not compound the mistake by starting the guy. It was Speights' first game back from injury and he played great. I could see him being a potential headcase down the road, but he has alot of ability. His postgame interview with Zumoff and Easy Ed was tough to get through without closed-captioning. Sweet Jesus!!! Gotta love the "student"-athletes the University of Florida churns out.
Brand has also been very spry off the bench lately. And this Holliday guy looks like a keeper as well. Wait, what's this? Are the Sixers becoming watchable again??? I thought so, just for a second, until they lost at home to the Clip-Joint the very next night. Wow. Sixers-Clippers in the midst of a blizzard!!! NBA Basketball, it's fantastic!!! I'm surprised anyone showed up for that game. Oh, also, the Sixers play no defense whatsoever, and it doesn't appear they ever will. And fuggetaboutit when Iverson is on the court. It takes 4 on 5 to a new level. It's like they're trying to kill off a power play or something.

Choppy Eagles game, but a win is a win. Actually was closer than it should've been. The Niners had no chance. Coming across the country on a short week after playing on MNF. If that Walter guy didn't fumble down inside the Eagles 10, it could be a whole different ballgame. This of course was after Reid's incomprehensible decision to go for it on 4th down from his own 30!! Stunning even for him. It's dumb even when Belichick does it, and he has 4 rings. The defense was better I guess. Couldn't be any worse. Tony Siragusa, the fat moron that stands on the field and screams dumb comments/observations every minute or so, said the Eagles defense was "unbelievable". Let's calm down. I'm pretty sure they were going up against Alex Smith.
Does Asante Samuel irk anyone else? I know he makes alot of plays (although that fumble recovery was all Sheldon Brown, he just fell on it). His "tackling" is horrifically bad. How bout when he completely whiffed on that tackle? What should've been a 3 yard gain turned into a 30 yard gain. Gambles a ton too. Can't have that against competent teams or you'll get burnt. Look at the Giants game. I know he's a good CB, but he annoys me sometimes. And stop dancing after you fall on a fumble!!!

Is anyone else giddy that the wheels are starting to come off Favre and the Vikings? Brad Childress is wound tighter than Reid's belt. Crazy that the Birds could possibly move ahead of them in playoff positioning. 4th and 26 game punts thrown up by Favre, here we come! It's a shame snowball-throwing fans didn't storm the booth and bombard Kenny Albert (Son of Gay Back-Biter) and "Moose" (Moose....Christ) Johnston with snowballs. Two jackasses.

Temple Ranked #21

The latest AP Poll to be released has your Temple Owls sitting at No.21 in the country – good stuff TU!  Winners of five straight, including a huge win over Villanova last Sunday, Temple currently sits at 9-2 overall this season.  Led by guards Ryan Brooks (15.2 ppg), Juan Fernandez (13.5 ppg) and forward Lavoy Allen (11.5 ppg, 10.4 rpg), the Owls are putting together a pretty nice season so far.  They’re no PSU, but whatever.  Their next games is Saturday vs. Bowling Green.   Go Owls!

Eagles 23 49ers 17: Donovan threw for one touchdown and ran for another, DeSean Jackson had 140 yards receiving and the Birds beat the Niners 27-13 Sunday to clinch a playoff spot for the eighth time this decade. It was a nice win for the Eagles, maintaining their one-game lead over the Cowboys in the East is big heading into the final two weeks.

Some quick thoughts on the game:

  • DeSean is a f*cking beast.  He’s unstoppable at this point.

  • Not only did Asante record another interception yesterday, his 8th of the year, but he actually made a great tackle late in the game.

  • I hope the Birds hold onto Sheldon after this season, he seems to make a play on defense every week.

  • How about the neck on Takeo Spikes? That thing is like a parasitic twin growing off of his shoulders.

  • Doc: Looks like Vick just has a quad contusion…the experiment continues.  Sorry dude.

  • Fact I did not know: The Eagles D had not allowed a running back to surpass 100-yards in 24 games – Frank Gore ran for 107 yesterday.  That’s impressive.

  • Michael Lewis looked like his old self yesterday, getting burned deep by WR’s and barely making an impact on the game.

  • Another playoff birth for the McNabb-Reid Eagles…good stuff.

Let’s hear your thoughts on yesterday’s game. What do you think about the Eagles chances in the postseason?

Dawkins comes home next weekend; I expect to see a ton of #20 jerseys in the crowd.  It should be a pretty emotional game for him and the fans.  Thoughts?

Doc's Picks:

San Francisco (6-7) at Philadelphia (9-4) Line: Phi (-7.5) O/U: 40.5

Low number for this game. I know it will be cold but I expect the Eagles and 49ers to cover that number easily.

Pick: Over

Miami (7-6) at Tennessee (6-7) Line: Ten (-5) O/U: 43

Miami should be desperate in this one hoping to keep their playoff and division hopes alive. The Titans dug themselves too big a whole with their bad start but have won 6 of 7 games.

Pick: Miami taking the points.

'04 Hawks are SI's Team of the Decade

Si.com

BEST SINGLE-SEASON TEAM: Saint Joseph's, 2004
St. Joe's didn't quite pull off a championship (losing to Oklahoma State in the Elite Eight), but the Hawks, led by incandescent point guard Jameer Nelson, became the first team to complete a perfect regular season since UNLV in 1991.

Wow not bad for a little Big 5 school. That team was fun to watch. Not to rain on their parade but the weak A-10 played a part in them finishing undefeated. It was still a huge accomplishment though

No.2 Texas 103 No.10 UNC 90: Damion James scored 25 points and grabbed 15 boards and Dexter Pittman had 23 and 15 in a top 10 showdown at Jerry's place. UNC fought back late but fell short.

No.7 Duke 76 No. 15 Gonzaga 41: Looks like the Zags weren't used to the cold - played at MSG. I predict Duke falls in second round of NCAA Tourney....again.

Wyoming 35 Fresno 28: (AP)—Freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels threw three touchdown passes, the last a 13-yarder to David Leonard in the second overtime Saturday, and Wyoming beat Fresno State 35-28 in the New Mexico Bowl. DW contributors and readers were wrong on this one.

Clippers 110 76ers 103 OT: Igoudala had 20, 9 and 7 for the Sixers in the second half of a back to back. Mo Speights had 28 points and 9 boards off the bench. That is a good sign. Need to see more of Speights. Igoudala drained a clutch shot just after the buzzer of regulation. Speights is the key to this teams future. I smell a much needed sixers post coming.

Rangers 2 Flyers 1: Another loss for the flyers in a game of two over priced underachievers. Here is another drunken prediction... Flyers reach the Conference Finals. Please don't ask for reasoning just believe it, its early.

'Boys 24 Saints 17: Marion Barber rushed for 2 td's and Romo hit Miles Austin for a TD ending New Orleans perfect season.

Lee "In Shock"

I think I would feel better about losing Lee if everything I heard about there being no chance he would resign with the Phils were true. What the Phils are saying, take it for what its worth, is that it was a baseball decision and they only traded Lee because they gave up 7 of their top 10 prospects. Lee's words after the jump.

My initial reaction was shock and disbelief.  Initially, I was disappointed because making it to the World Series was a lot of fun, and I was looking forward to making a third run at it.
At first I didn’t believe it, because I thought that we were working out an extension with the Phillies and I thought that I was going to spend the rest of my career there…This goes to show this is a business, and you never know what’s going to happen until you have a full no-trade clause.”
Why do you think it an extension didn’t work out?
“There was not enough dialogue. (Also) They had an opportunity to get the best pitcher in baseball, and I can’t blame them for choosing Roy Halladay over me…I was under the impression they would keep me for a long time.
I’m going to be as positive as I can, and go over there and try to make it to the World Series with those guys…it’s a new chapter. I’ve got to go to the Mariners and make the best of it. I’m going to go in with an open mind and do everything I can.”
(martino)

These prospects the Phillies got in return for Lee may very well turn out to be good players but the Phils could have received 2 first round picks if Lee walked in 2010. Drafting above slot this summer could also have helped quickly replenish the system. Players want to come to Philly - high school and college kids will to. Damn - how good would a Halladay-Lee-Hamels-Blanton-Happ rotation have looked.

I'll stop bitching about losing Lee soon enough but not quite yet.

Is It April Yet?

There is only one piece of the pie left for your Phightin Phils, and that is bullpen. I trust that Amaro will go after the right pitchers that can pitch in the right roles out of the pen. There are rumors that Fernando Rodney or Mike McDougal may be the next to put on the red and white pinstripes. At this point who wouldn't want to put them on. I cannot remember a time up until now that players wanted to play in Philly. The best pitcher in baseball settled for less than what he was asking for to pitch in Philly. If this doesn't get you pumped then you better go to Flushing, New York and become one of those loser Mets fans! Which is my next point that I want to make. How 'bout them Mets! While the Phils are getting key players to make another run, the Mets are trying to negotiate a contract with a 35 year old over weight catcher hahaha. By the way if he signs with the Mets, that will be their third catcher that they signed this off season (Henry Blanco (38) and Chris Coste (34)). You know its bad when Chris Coste is making excuses for why he signed with the Mets. Although, I did hear that there are talks about going after Jason Bay, but he is not of Hispanic descent so I am sure that Minaya thinks he is no good. I hope that there are some Mets fans out there that read this, but I doubt there will be. Just in case any of you do read this though, I just want to say to all of you: Merry Christmas you losers, by the way Santa told me that he hates all of you. While all of you will be crying about being in 4th place in the NL East next year, Phils fans can go to sleep at night knowing that Roy Halladay is a Phuckin Phil! Read More

So This is Why the Flyers Suck

According to The Philly Four, the Flyers locker room is in shambles amidst rumors that Jeff Carter had an affair with Scott Hartnell’s wife.  Apparently the locker room is split over the incident, and this could be a reason for the team’s terrible play lately. Wow.  Reminds of the time Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn slept with Roger Dorn’s wife.  Pretty f’d up story.

On the Pharm

Thanks to CSNPHILLY for breaking down the new prospects received in the Blockbuster. Read it here

Phillipe Aumont, who was the 11th pick in the 2007 draft, is similar in style to Jason Knapp, whom the Phillies traded to Cleveland in July as part of the previous Lee deal. He’s long and lanky and brings it in the low-to-mid 90s. He’s not anywhere as polished as Drabek and, like Knapp, is nowhere near ready to pitch in the upper levels of the minor leagues let alone the Major Leagues.

Though drafted as a starter, the Mariners moved Aumont to the bullpen in 2009, his first full season in pro ball. Aumont, who will turn 20 next month, was 2-6 with a 3.88 ERA in a combined 44 appearances at High Desert of the Class-A California League and West Tennessee of the Double-A Southern League.

He had 16 saves, only four of them coming in the Southern League. He had a 5.09 ERA in 17 2/3 innings at West Tenn.

Tyson Gillies, is legally deaf and wears a hearing aid in each ear, led the Cal League with 44 steals. He finished second in hits [170], OBP [.430], runs scored [104] and triples [14]. He was third in hitting [.341] and also led the league after getting thrown out trying to steal 19 times.

Gillies relies on his speed, no doubt, but how he fares outside of the offensive-minded Cal League will be more telling. The Eastern League, where he will likely be playing in 2010, is a grinding league.

Juan Ramirez, turned 21 in August and also spent the entire season in the Cal League, going 8-10 with a 5.12 ERA in 28 games [27 starts]. Like Gillies, a truer indication of how he’ll fare will come in 2010 in the Eastern League. The Cal League shreds young pitchers and it is rare that any one can step in and succeed at the high altitudes and bandbox ballparks.

He also has some control issues – he hit 17 batters in 2009 and uncorked 14 wild pitches. Like Aumont, though, he has a lively low-to-mid 90s fastball that occasionally creeps into the upper 90s. Ramirez simply needs to figure out how to control it.

There you go, these are your new phils of the future.

Also - (philled in) with some good stuff on the prospects.

So What Do We Think?

Still not finalized but it looks like the Phils are going to be giving up prized prospects Michael Taylor, Kyle Drabek and Travis d’Arnaud in return for prospect pitchers Phillipe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez and outfielder Tyson Gillies.

Am I forgetting anybody? Ahh yes, the Phils get Roy Halladay and lose postseason hero Cliff Lee.

What could have been without Moyer's ill advised 2nd year?

Short term, I don't think the Phils are much better if at all for 2010. This deal was made for the security of having Halladay for multiple years- which is huge. Halladay is widely regarded as the best pitcher in baseball. Lookinng forward to some Halladay vs Santana matchups this summer. The Phillies have to hope Halladay stays healthy and Hamels can learn from his work ethic.

I can't say I know much about the Aumont, Ramirez and Gillies except from what I am reading - they seem pretty good yet raw. Taylor hits the snot out of the ball but he would have been stuck at AAA this year with an even bigger prospect (Brown)on his heels. It is tough giving up Drabek but hopefully Aumont and/or Ramirez can offset losing him. Gillies seems to be a few years away but could replace one of the outfielders eventually.

This is a tough deal to grade right away. Yes I would have loved to have Lee and Halladay but the wallets say that could not have happened. I say suck it up, eat the 9 million and then collect the two 1st rounders next year...Oh well. I am cautiously optimistic. I hate to lose Clifton but it didn't seem like he was going to resign. I hate to lose the prospects but it seems like the Phils got some in return.

I look forward to seeing Roy in Phils Red and another long postseason run.

Been quiet around here. What do you guys think?
