Pedro in Reading

Pedro Martinez takes the mound tonight for Reading in what should be his final rehab start before being called up to the big leagues. The Phillies still have not publicly acknowledged where the 37-year-old righthander is going to fit into the current rotation, but it seems that J.A. Happ is going to be the odd man out. As much as I don’t want to see Happ taken out of his role as a starter, he will probably bring some stability to a bullpen hit by a rash of injuries lately.

What are their other options, really? Moyer can’t pitch out of the pen, and unless they remove him from the rotation completely it looks like he’s there to stay. What happens if Pedro comes in and stinks up the joint (which is a definite possibility)? Will they drop him to the bullpen and bring Happ back to the rotation? The Phils haven’t offered up any solutions to the six-starter quandary they are about to find themselves in, but I have faith they will make the right decision - Charlie will do what’s best for the team.

  1. I do not see the rush to get Pedro in here. He did not really dominate in his AAA start. Lets see him get some hitters out before the Phils remove someone from the rotation. Moyers next start is against Florida so that should buy Pedro one more start to get his arm ready.

  2. I agree. It doesn't sound like Pedro is ready to start in the bigs yet.

  3. Yea I dont think that there is any rush to get Pedro in there. Make sure that he is 100% ready to contribute before he takes the mound. I think that he is going to be huge for the back end of the rotation

  4. 11 K's for Pedro in 6 innings...Happ cannot drop from the rotation though after this performance
