DW '09 Season Preview: San Diego Chargers

Last Year: 8-8

Key Additions: Kevin Burnett ILB, Larry English DE

Offense: The Chargers are coming off of a difficult season in which they only won 8 games. They still happened to win the division thanks to a total collapse by the Denver Broncos and thanks in large part to a 5-1 divisional record. This offense is too good to only win 8 games. Philip Rivers enters his fourth season as the starting QB, coming off of a season in which he threw for 34 TD’s and only 11 INT’s. Ladainian Tomlinson is looking to rebound from his least productive season and is facing many of the same questions Brian Westbrook is facing in Philly heading into the season of his 30th birthday. Darren Sproles, the franchise player, is an explosive backup/change of pace back. Antonio Gates is heading into a contract year coming off of his least productive season since his rookie year. He remains as one of the top three TE’s in the game. Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers lead a quality wide receiving core.

Defense
: If Shawn Merriman can return from a serious knee injury, this defense can return to the upper echelon in the league. DT Luis Castillo and CB Antonio Cromartie are coming off a disappointing years but both figure to bounce back and along with Merriman and LB Shaun Phillips, anchor a strong D. 1st round pick Larry English will also look to contribute as a defensive end.

Fantasy Studs: Philip Rivers is an elite QB who could improve on his numbers with healthy seasons from Tomlinson and Gates. LaDainian Tomlinson: 1110 yds, 11 TD’s in ’08. He will not be the consensus top overall pick as he was in the past few season but could bounce back. Give extra value if in a PPR (point per reception) league as he may figure more into Turner’s pass first attack. Antonio Gates: 60 Rec, 8 TD’s. You cannot go wrong with Gates.

Prediction
: 12-4. I am not sure the Chargers will be as good as their record suggests but the weakness of the division will catapult San Diego to a 1st round Bye in the playoffs. Read More

Manny and Papi Busted

The New York Times is reporting Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz tested positive for steroids in 2003, the same survey testing period which showed Alex Rodriguez and Sammy Sosa to also be PED users. Is anyone surprised? A few notes from the SI.com article:

The list included the names of players who tested positive during survey testing, implemented for the 2003 season to determine whether or not baseball needed a full-fledged testing program, which went into effect the next season.

According to the Times, the lawyers did not reveal which drugs the players tested positive for. Ortiz said "I have no comment" when asked about the matter on Thursday by a Times reporter in Boston.

When Sports Illustrated reported in February that Alex Rodriguez had tested positive for steroids in 2003, Ortiz said any player who tested positive should be suspended for an entire season.

Hilarious! MLB should just reveal all 104 names at this point - the story might actually go away faster that way. It’s obvious reporters are going to keep the PED witch hunt alive until all the guilty players are named, dragging this story out for years - just get it over with already. Bud Selig should clear his conscience once and for all, do baseball fans a favor and expose the frauds for what they really are - cheaters.

Who else do you think is on the list?

Pitching Rant

Late morning pitching rant from friend of DirtyWudders, The Don.... I think the Lee acquisition certainly makes the Phil’s starting rotation the best in the NL and on par with Boston and the Yanks (assuming neither lands Halladay). The number one question now is what to do about the back of the bullpen? Lidge, right now is terrible, Madson has been erratic, and Condrey, Durbin and Romero are on the DL. Should Lidge stay the closer? What about Myers if he comes back healthy or Pedro with his four pitch repertoire? He might be able to let it all hang out if he only had to go one inning. Too many starters (Hamels, Lee, Happ, Moyer, Pedro, Lopez) and a bullpen that needs to be settled soon. Coming up with the right pitchers to fill the right roles will be Manuel’s hardest decision as we head toward the playoffs. Read More

Phils Lose...That Doesn't Sound Right.

D-Backs 4 Phils 0: Justin Upton hit a 2-run HR and drove in three runs as the D-Backs avoided the sweep and beat the Phils 4-0 last night in Arizona.  In what might have been his last outing as a starter, J.A. Happ lasted 6 innings and gave up two runs on only three hits.  Happ is expected to be moved into the bullpen with the arrival of lefty ace Cliff Lee to the club.  This was only the sixth time the Phils have lost in their last 25 games; they lead the NL East by six games.  Shane Victorino left the game in the 7th with a left knee contusion, an injury he sustained while making a diving catch in the 1st inning.  Hopefully it’s nothing serious.

How pumped are you for Cliff Leff? The trade has to make the Phils frontrunners in the NL – if they weren’t already. I know he’s not Roy Halladay, but he’s not too far behind, and Hamels-Lee-Blanton in the playoffs is going to be nasty! I’m hoping his first start will be Saturday against Tim Lincecum. That would be a hell of a first test in the NL.

DW '09 Season Preview: Oakland Raiders

Last Year: 5-11

Key Additions: Jeff Garcia QB, Lorenzo Neal FB, Greg Ellis DE, Darrius Heyward-Bey WR

Offense: Jamarcus Russell comes into this season as a bust waiting to happen, and if he struggles in the least bit Jeff Garcia will be there to pick up the slack. Garcia has won at every stop in his career, so don’t be surprised if he is named the team’s full time starting QB over Russell. The Raiders have a three-pronged RB attack that, if healthy, could be one of the best in the league. The combination of Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush certainly has the ability to wreak havoc on opposing defenses this season. Oakland’s WR core is nothing to write home about, and 1st Round Pick Darrius Heyward-Bey has a lot to prove after being drafted over Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree in the draft. With no go-to receiver on the squad, Heyward-Bey will be expected to contribute right away – a lot of pressure for the rookie out of Maryland.

Defense: The defensive line is full of holes on this team, and the Raiders are hoping Greg Ellis can provide a pass rush threat to this below-average group. The LB core is fast and athletic and they have two solid CB’s in the secondary. Nmamdi Asomugha has turned into one of the best corners in the league and was rewarded with a big contract in the offseason - $28.5 guaranteed. Chris Johnson is the LCB for Oakland, taking the place of DeAngelo Williams last year and doing a hell of a job. If the D-line can’t get any pressure on opposing QB’s expect these guys to be busy all season.

Fantasy Studs: Darren McFadden: 113 car, 499 yds, 4 TD’s in ’08. If healthy, has the ability to be a big point-scorer for fantasy teams. Still hasn’t proven anything as a pro, but the potential is certainly there. Darrius Heyward-Bey: 1st round pick out of Purdue is a speedster and could be considered a HR threat for the Raiders. Rookie receivers are tough to judge, though, I wouldn’t count on him. JaMarcus Russell: 13 TD’s, 8 INT, 2423 yds in ’08. Maybe…if he’s even the starter. He started to show signs of life towards the end of last year, but I wouldn’t recommend drafting him unless you’re desperate.

Prediction: 5-11. Even if Garcia starts a majority of the games, this team still hasn’t done enough to improve much from last year.

Phils get Cliff Lee

The Phillies have reached agreement with the Indians on a trade that would bring them left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to major-league sources. The deal is pending a review of medical records. (Foxsports)

Carrasco Scratched from Start

Jason Stark is reporting that Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald and Lou Marson have been pulled from the Iron Pigs lineup on Wednesday morning (11AM start) and that all signs are pointing the Phillies to Cliff Lee.

Take it for what it is worth, as there are millions of rumors floating out there but if the deal is Cliff Lee for those three players, I think it is a steal for the Phillies. Stark says the offer may be Carrasco, Jason Knapp and Trevor May.

Foxsports is reporting: The Phillies are in discussions with the Indians to obtain left-hander Cliff Lee and possibly another player for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to a major-league source...Also the Dodgers are going to make a STRONG push

Warning - These may very well be posturing or just more crazy rumors. What are the thoughts on Lee vs Halladay? Knapp vs Drabek.

Jim Johnson: 1941-2009

Eagles longtime defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away this afternoon after a six-month battle with cancer. Over the last decade Johnson led an Eagles defense that was feared by opponents and beloved by the fans. He was responsible for a defense that hovered around the top of the league in all defensive categories, and his blitz schemes became famous around the league for driving offensive coordinators crazy. He brought a new attitude to the Birds D and changed the way the game was played. It is obvious from hearing former and current players speak about Johnson that he was loved by his players - not only for being a great coach, but for being a great man. We lost a great one today, Philly. You will be missed, Jim. Read More

DW '09 Season Preview: Kansas City Chiefs

Last Year: 2-14
Key Addidtions in ’09: QB Matt Cassel, HC Todd Haley, GM Scott Pioli, LB Mike Vrabel, LB Zach Thomas, WR Bobby Engram, DE Tyson Jackson
Key Losses: TE Tony Gonzalez, QB Damon Huard

Offense: New GM Scott Pioli and the Chiefs believe in Matt Cassel. Matt Cassel stepped in for injured Tom Brady last year and threw for 3600 yards, 21 TDs and 11 Ints while leading the Patriots to the brink of the playoffs. Great pickup, right? Maybe. The difference here is the New England had arguably the best skill position players in the league and KC does not. Dwayne Bowe may be a step away from an elite WR but how much will Tony Gonzalez’s departure hurt him? Tyler Thigpen is an adequate backup QB and may challenge Cassel after throwing for 18 TD’s and running for 3 more in ’08. The Cheifs scored more points when Thigpen was given the keys to Chan Gaileys spread offense. Larry Johnson will look to revive his career after an injury plaqued 2008. Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith will be used to keep LJ fresh. If the Chiefs hope to compete, they will need Johnson to revert to his 2006 form and for Bobby Engram to fill the # 2 receiver role for Cassel. This offense may struggle, but still put up yards and points due to consistantly playing from behind.
.

Defense: The Chiefs are coming off of a season in which they registered 10 sacks, fewest in the history of the 16 game schedule. They are now moving from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense that leaves former LSU Tiger Glenn Dorsey out of position at DE opposite fomer LSU Tiger Ty Jackson. Former Pat, Mike Vrabel and former Nittany Lion Tamba Hali will man the OLB’s for KC. The Chiefs used their first 3 draft picks to improve the D. This unit will also most likely struggle.

Fantasy Studs: Dwayne Bowe: 86 Rec, 1022 yds, 7 TD’s in ’08. He is clearly the #1 option in this pass happy offense and has hovered around the 1000 yard mark in each of his first two seasons. He should look to improve with the upgraded QB position. Matt Cassel: 21 TD’s, 3693 yds. Fantasy risk considering the drop in talent around him but should put decent enough numbers in K.C.’s 4 wide out, spread offense. Larry Johnson is hardly a stud anymore but could be a mid round sleeper if he can get back to the days where he was the consensus #2 overall pick.

Prediction: 4-12 Scott Pioli brought in a number of veterans to make a quick turnaround but will more than likely find that hard to come by.

The Morning After

Phils 6 D-Backs 2: It wasn’t pretty early on, but Jamie Moyer pitched 6-2/3 shutout innings last night, leading the Phils to a 6-2 victory in Arizona and extending their lead in the NL East to 7 games. Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez, Pedro Feliz and Paul Bako each drove in a run and helped improve the WFC’s road record to a MLB-leading 30-15.

Grand Slams: Lots of grand slams last night, especially in the NL East. Josh Willingham blasted two grand slams and tied a franchise record with 8 RBI’s in the Nationals 14-6 win over the Brewers. Fernando Tatis hit a go-ahead GS in the 8th inning against the Rockies to put the Mets up for good in a 7-3 victory.  Finally, the Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano hit a walk-off grand slam in the 13th inning against the Astros, giving them a 5-1 victory.

Roy Halladay: Per SI.com’s Jon Heyman, One high-ranking official with one of those clubs put the chances for a deal now at “five percent”….Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi was quoted telling FoxSports.com that the chances for a deal now are “very slim.”

DW '09 Season Preview: Denver Broncos

Key Additions in ‘09: Brian Dawkins, Knowshon Moreno, Kyle Orton

Offense: Jay Cutler is out, Kyle Orton is in. Translation: good luck, Josh McDaniels. Orton is the bad news for Denver; the good news is RB Knowshon Moreno, the Broncos 1st Round Pick from Georgia. Moreno is an elite talent and an all-around thread on offense. He is projected to be the starter for Denver this season, with backups Lamont Jordan and former Eagle Correll Buckhalter pitching in as well. Another positive going into this season is the offensive line - they are a solid group and have all five starters returning from last year. If Brandon Marshall shows up at camp and can remain healthy and happy, the Broncos may have a decent offense in ’09. I just can’t get past Kyle Orton, though. With Jay Cutler this team could hope to compete with the best, without him I just don’t see it happening.

Defense: The other big offseason story in Denver was the signing of Philly fan-favorite Brian Dawkins. Dawkins will bring stability to the safety position, something Denver was lacking last year. He had a solid year for the Eagles last year and looks like he has a couple of good years left in him. Champ Bailey is still a shutdown corner, and if he can stay healthy will probably be one of the best in the league again. One issue with the secondary is age, with all four starters being over 30 - durability could be a factor down the stretch for the old-timers. The D-line is the real issue on Denver’s defense. Their DE’s have one combined start among the four on the roster, and I dare you to name one of their DT’s. They need someone to step up or it could be a long season for the group. They have solid depth at linebacker and should be productive as a unit. DJ Williams is expected to have a breakout season at ILB.

Fantasy Studs: Brandon Marshall: 104 Rec, 1265 yds, 6 TD’s in ’08. He’s a lock to be a fantasy stud, back-to-back 100 reception seasons in ‘07 and ‘08. Knowshon Moreno: 1st round pick out of Georgia should be the starter right out of the gate. He was one of the best RB’s in college football last year and is a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. Eddie Royal: 91 Rec, 980 yds, 5 TD’s in ’08. Royal had a breakout rookie season in ’08 and if he can repeat that performance will be worth taking in any league.

Prediction: 6-10. Kyle Orton is no Jay Cutler - I think they struggle this season

Penn State Voted No.1 Party School

Penn State has been voted the Number One party school in the country in 2009 by the Princeton Review. I believe it.  Anyone who has spent time in State College can attest to the school’s partying prowess, and there is nothing like a PSU tailgate on a Saturday morning in the fall.  Good times.

Other areas PSU made the Top 20 in the survey: students dissatisfied with financial aid, No. 2; jock schools, No. 3; major frat and sorority scene, No. 3; best athletic facilities, No. 3; best career services, No. 6; everyone plays intramural sports, No. 6; best college newspaper, No. 6; lots of hard liquor, No. 9; students study the least, No. 11; and least politically active students, No. 17.

I’m sure the parents of prospective/current PSU students love hearing these kinds of reports.

Two Scumbags to be Charged in CBP Death

Philadelphia police are set to charge two suspects in the beating death of 22-year-old David Sale on Saturday in the parking lot of Citizens Bank Park.  I hope these two - if they are in fact the guilty parties - get the book thrown at them.  I don’t understand this kind of thing.  You head down to a Phillies game to have a good time, maybe have a few beers and watch a game – where does fighting play a part in the game day experience?  I can guarantee these punks were at McFadden’s looking for a fight, you see these kinds of people all the time. They’re the same scumbags giving Philly fans a bad name around the country.  99% of fans at CBP are there to have a good time, but you get trash like this ruining it for everyone.  The contributors at Dirty Wudders have attended every Sunday home game for the last three years and have never so much as gotten into an argument, let alone a brawl.  What’s the point? It’s a goddamn shame this kid had to die in order to save the world from having to deal with two thugs for the rest of their lives, hopefully.  There is no room for scum like that at a Phillies game, a bar, or anywhere else for that matter.

Phils 9 Cards 2: HR”s from Utley, Howard, Rollins and Ibanez gave Joe Blanton plenty of run support as the Phils cruised to their 17th win in their last 20 games.  Blanton pitched a gem, giving up 2 runs in 8 innings while striking out 6.  He has allowed two runs or less and pitched at least seven innings in five of his last six starts for Fightins. The Marlins and Braves won yesterday and the Phils lead remains at 6.5.

Roy Halladay: It was reported last night that the Blue Jays shot down the Phillies latest counter offer.  Toronto requested a package which included Kyle Drabek, J.A. Happ and outfield prospect Dominic Brown, but the Phils think that’s too much. Other prospects being tossed around in discussions are pitcher Carlos Carrasco, outfielder Michael Taylor, catcher Lou Marson and shortstop Jason DonaldTalks around Cliff Lee are said to be heating up now that Toronto doesn’t seem to want to budge on their initial demands.

Training Camp: Football season is upon us…Eagles training camp kicks off today at Lehigh.  Too bad we have to wait another two months for anything meaningful to take place.  I’m still pretty pumped.

Mets will Buy!

10.5 games out of the division, 7.5 out of a wildcard berth but with Reyes, Maine and Delgado scheduled to return in the coming weeks, the Mets are going to make a run for it. "Right now we do not envision [being a seller]," Omar Minaya said. "If we're 6 ½ [back] in the wild card with a couple of teams in front of us, we are still kind of trying to find out how we can improve this team, if we can improve it through trades.". (NYPOST)

This is good news for the Phillies. Omar Minaya is clearly on the hot seat and it looks as if he is going to do what it takes to make this team win, now. Will he mortgage the future like he did in Montreal, when he dealt Grady Sizemore, Brandon Phillips and Cliff Lee for Bartolo Colon? Well, probably not, but only because he doesn't have those types of prospects.

This Mets team is dead. Beltran is more than likely out for the year. Now John Maine is probably done. Will Reyes be able to run like he did before his hammy problem? I'll take my chances on that. Even Billy Wags is coming back for his least favorite month.

Here is hoping the Mets make a big splash at the deadline. It is not quite as much fun having them out of it in July. Lets see them mortgage the future for another failed shot at the playoffs.

J - Rollin'

The Phils just beat up on the Padres last night to extend their lead in the NL East to 6.5 games. They have now won 15 of their last 17 and are one of the hottest teams in baseball. Cole pitched good enough to win, but he seems to have that one inning that slows him down. Pedro Feliz and Jayson Werth continue to stay hot combining for a 6-10 night. Feliz is such a different player this year now that his back is healthy again. The double play turned between Chase and Pedro last night was rare, but it was actually a great baseball play. Even Choochie joined in on the fun by hitting a home run. The Phils are clicking on all cylinders right now. I know there are some dirty wudders followers out there that have disagreed in the past about this, but there is one major reason that the Phillies are 15-2 in their last 17 games.

Yes that is right Jimmy Rollins is the biggest part to this recent Phillies domination. Since July 3rd Rollins is 21-54 (.380), with 12 extra base hits, an OBP of .484, and scored 13 runs. He has raised his batting average 31 points in this stretch and he is starting to steal more bases. When Rollins goes the whole team goes, thats why he is our lead off guy. Could you imagine having him buried down in the 8 hole now? Just when the old schoolers out there are ready to give up on him, he totally redeems himself. Most of us knew that he would eventually break out, and boy did he in a huge way. Having him and Victo at the top of the order getting on base is nothing but a nightmare to NL pitching. The Phils are streaking right now and lets hope that they continue to dominate. The Phils head into the weekend series against the slumping Cards. Lets take three from them and be done with it before Matt Holliday arrives in St. Louis.

See You in Section 202 on Sunday.

The Phils throw Cole Hamels out against Kevin Correia and San Diego today before starting a 3 game set with St. Louis tomorrow. The Phils hold a 5.5 game lead over streaking Atlanta and San Diego is 21 games below .500 and 24 games behind front running L.A.

Mets: The Mets lost to the Nats again and are now 10 games back.

Top 100 Full of Phils

Did anyone check out Joe Posnanski’s list of his Top 100 players in baseball right now? Did anyone check out the SIX Phillies position players on the list? The only position players not making the cut were Chooch Ruiz and Pedro Feliz - just another testament to the greatness that has become World F’n Champions.  Now I realize Posnanski’s opinion doesn’t mean much to most people, but the fact that he can recognize 1 thru 6 in the Fightin’s lineup as being six of the best in the game is a pretty nice compliment.  Now it’s time to bitch…

Where is Hamels!?  I know he’s having an up and down year in ’09, but I refuse to believe that a GM would take Jarrod Washburn (and others on the list) over Cole Hamels!  To follow Posnanski’s logic for the selection process, the idea is that you are a GM in an expansion draft with a full player pool, all injury-free.  There is no way in hell I’m taking 34-year-old Jarrod Washburn over 25-year-old World Series MVP Cole Hamels if there was a draft tomorrow.  I realize Washburn is currently having the better season of the two, but I’ll take Hamels head-to-head all day if my team needs a win.  Did I mention he was the World Series MVP last year? That’s at least worth a mention in the Top 100.

Anyway, here is where the six Phils figured into the list: Utley (5), Ibanez (26), Howard (32), Werth (67), Victorino (82), Rollins (83).  It’s a great time to be a Phillies fan.

Top 5 DE's

Here is the 5th installment of Ray Didinger's Top 5's. Click here for the 1st 4 installments. Unlike Linebacker, Defensive End has been a strength for the Eagles more often than not over the past 25 or so years. Here are Ray's top 5:

1. Reggie White (1985-92) – The greatest defensive lineman ever to wear an Eagles uniform. He set the club record with 124 career sacks, he never missed a game in eight years with the team and he was voted into seven consecutive Pro Bowls, the longest such streak in Eagles history.

He was 6-5 and played most of his career at 300 pounds, yet he had the quickness and agility of a much smaller man. He was almost impossible to block one on one. When he left the team following the 1992 season, he was the only player in the NFL to have more sacks than games played (121). He had 21 sacks in just 12 games in the strike-shortened 1987 season.

White took pride in being a complete player. Unlike some other defensive ends who only cared about rushing the quarterback and piling up sacks, White was a solid run defender who averaged more than 100 tackles per season with the Eagles. He was voted NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice, 1987 and 1991.

2. Hugh Douglas (1998-2002, 2004) – The Eagles acquired Douglas from the New York Jets in 1998 in exchange for a second- and a fifth-round draft choice. It was one of the best deals in club history, as Douglas was voted into three Pro Bowls in his first five seasons as an Eagle.

It was a difficult choice trying to decide between Douglas and Clyde Simmons as the No. 2 defensive end. Clearly, both players were very good. I leaned towards Douglas because Simmons had the advantage of having Reggie White on the opposite side drawing double teams for most of his career. Douglas was the team’s best pass rusher, which means he got the tougher matchups week after week.

At 6-2 and 280 pounds, he gave away 30 or more pounds to most of the offensive tackles he lined up against, but he was so quick and strong he was able to get under the blocker’s pads, turn the corner and get to the quarterback. He tied a team record with 4½ sacks in a 1998 game against San Diego. He ranks third on the Eagles list for career sacks with 54½.

3. Clyde Simmons (1986-93) – Simmons broke into the starting lineup as a 275-pound terror at right end in 1987 and helped the Eagles forge the NFL’s No. 1 defense.

In eight seasons with the Eagles, Simmons had 76½ sacks, second only to White on the team’s all-time list. Simmons led the league with 19 sacks in 1992. He set a team record (later tied by Douglas) with 4½ sacks of Troy Aikman in a 24-0 rout of the Cowboys in 1991.

A very fluid athlete – he once covered Michael Jordan in a high school basketball tournament in his native North Carolina – Simmons used speed and moves as well as power to defeat blockers.

4. William Fuller (1994-96) – He played only three seasons with the Eagles so sometimes he is overlooked, but Fuller belongs on this list. He made the Pro Bowl all three seasons and ranked among the league leaders in sacks.

Fuller was similar to Douglas in terms of size. At 6-3 and 280 pounds, he was built low to the ground and he used that power in his lower body to jack up taller blockers and anchor against the run. He had 9½ sacks in 1994 and 13 sacks each of the next two seasons.

Nicknamed “The Fuller Rush Man,” he set an Eagles record by recording at least one sack in seven consecutive games in 1994. He had two sacks of Steve Young, including one for a safety, in a 40-8 rout of San Francisco, the worst loss the 49ers ever suffered at Candlestick Park.

5. Norm Willey (1950-57) –In 1952, Willey had 17 sacks in one game against the New York Giants. I know it is hard to believe, but here is a published account from the Philadelphia Bulletin:

Willey awed inhabitants of the Polo Grounds by dumping Giants quarterback Charlie Conerly 17 times while he was attempting to pass, causing New York scribes to remark, “‘He’s the greatest defensive end we’ve ever seen and probably the greatest we’ll ever see.’”

Dirty Wudders enjoys this list because we have seen 80% of the top 5 play. We never saw Wiley play but his description makes him seem like a worthy choice. DW actually disagrees with Ray's order:

1. Reggie - The Minister of Defense; no doubt about it. Arguably the best DE ever, and clearly the best DW has ever seen.
2. Simmons - Maybe teams double teamed Reggie to free up Clyde but 76.5 sacks speak for itself.
3. Douglas
4. Fuller - 35.5 sacks in 3 seasons
5. Trent Cole - 34.5 sacks in first 4 seasons, Cole has a chance to move up this very tough list.

This Guy

Last night I attended the Phillies game and sat in the same seats where I witnessed the greatest moment of my life. This was the first time since game 5 that I sat in those seats and it brought back some great memories. There was just one problem there was this annoying petty Cubs fan blocking my view of Jimmy Rollins. This guy, (pictured above, in case you haven't noticed) was holding up a sign that read "Philadelphia Phillies = 10,000 losses". So being the ridiculous fan that I am I took a picture of him and thought to myself that I am going to write him a letter on dirtywudders today. I gave him the name of our blog, and hopefully he remebers to check us out and read this.

Dear This Guy,

I want to thank you first and foremost for providing me with some ammo to express how little I care about the fact that you, and the rest of the north side of Chicago haven't won a world series in over a decade. Year in and year out the Cubbies are the favorites to go to the World Series, and year in and year out they choke. I mean you blame your losing ways on a goat. A goat?! What does a goat have to do with the fact that your players suck. At least when Philadelphia has losing seasons we blame it on the players and the umps. Something that actualy has an impact on the game itself. Also next time you go to a ball game please make sure the sign that you are holding does not have anything to do with the Phils and losing. You can get away with that at a Pirates or a Nats game, but not here. I cannot believe that you were actually offended that the whole section was tearing into you for holding that sign. You called Philly fans insecure. Maybe you are right, actually you hit the nail right on the head. At the same time you are holding a sign that is only going to make things worse. Your best bet is to just sit there and enjoy the game. Just be glad that is was section 138, and not section 202 on a Sunday. That would have gotten real ugly real fast. Just ask some of the other Section 202 whack packers like pube face or pimple/mole boy. One thing I can say is that Cubs fans are no where near as bad as Mets fans. So I guess I can commend you for not being a Mets fan, This Guy. Well hopefully you enjoyed your stay in Philly this week while the Phils were kicking the you know what out of your precious Cubbies. I would say see you in the playoffs, but you wont make it.

Sincerely Yours,
Peace and Love

Ten in a row!!!!

Phils 4 Cubs 1: Jayson Werth blasted a walk-off 3-run HR in the 13th to secure the Phils 10th straight victory, their longest streak since 1991.  The 4-1 score doesn’t really do the game justice, though. This game was all about pitching.  The starters for both teams were great last night, Harden’s line was 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, Blanton’s was 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K – what a game.   The relievers were great too, holding both teams scoreless until Werth’s HR in the 13th off of Jeff Samardzija.  Chan Ho was the man in the late innings, 3 IP 0 ER 0 H 5 K – perfection.  The Phils have a day game this afternoon, Jamie Moyer takes the mound. Go Phils!

Rangers 4 Red Sox 2: Texas’ Tommy Hunter allowed one run and four hits over six innings to beat Josh Beckett, who still threw his third complete game in six starts, in the Rangers’ 4-2 win.  Boston has now lost four straight, their longest losing streak since last July, and have only scored eight runs in that stretch.  The Yankees beat Baltimore 4-2 last night and are now all alone atop the AL East, a spot the Sox have held since June 9.

Halladay Sweepstakes: From SI.com: The Toronto Blue Jays say any trade for ace Roy Halladay needs to be completed by July 28.  General manager J.P. Ricciardi said Tuesday the deadline is necessary to get all agreements in place for what would be a complicated deal. The GM also wants this matter resolved before Halladay makes a scheduled start July 29 in Seattle.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

The Phillies are in a ridiculously strong position here. How often do the World Series Champions, also have the best prospects to acquire the top talent? The Red Sox and Yankess, I guess, have in the past but alot of that was just willingness to spend money. From (foxsports); The notion that the Jays cannot justify trading Halladay to the Phillies without acquiring Brown or the team's other top prospect, Class AA right-hander Kyle Drabek, is absurd. One scout who covers the Phillies says he likes Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, who is currently on the disabled list, even better than Drabek.

That should be great news for those who do not want to trade Drabek. In Rosenthal's article; The same scout says he would be comfortable taking Class A outfielder Anthony Gose or Class AAA outfielder Michael Taylor if he could not acquire Brown.

There is also a report that Kyle Kendrick has been pulled from his 'Pigs start tonight, raising speculation that he may be part of a deal soon - possibly for right handed bat, Josh Willingham or the Rockies Ryan Spilborghs.

The Phillies have their "Balls in the Air"

The Phillies have other options if they cannot acquire Roy Halladay. According to Ken Rosenthal, when asked whether the Phillies were still interested in Cliff Lee, one club official responded, "We have many balls in the air. And we are still looking for top-of-the-rotation help."

Rosenthal goes on to say that acquiring Lee would mean giving up a package of a major league ready starter (J.A. Happ), and prospects (Carlos Carrasco and Dominic Brown).

That may be a nice consolation prize but I think there is more risk in Cliff Lee than in Halladay. If I am giving up that kind of potential, I am looking for sure things. If push comes to shove and Halladay is off of the market, I think I would give serious thought to that offer.

Halladay Update

Espn insider is reporting that the Phils and the Rangers are the final teams left in the Halladay sweepstakes. The Angels have dropped out, and the Dodgers are not willing to part with their top prospects. The Phils are the perfect fit for Halladay, I just hope that the price isn't too steep. Also SI.com reported that the Mets rejection to the Halladay trade offer was apparently bogus. The deal was never in consideration.

The headline on espn insider says "Halladay to the Phillies". If that is not a tell tale sign that the Phillies are really close to pulling the trigger than I dont know what is. This is a great time to be a Phillies fan. I dont want to jinx anything, but this could be one of the biggest moves for the Phillies in a long time. Lets hope to see Halladay in pin stripes real soon.

Top 5 MLB's

Here is the 4th installment of Ray Didinger's Top 5's. Click here for Safeties, Corners and OLB's.

1. Chuck Bednarik (1949-62)- A native of Bethlehem, Bednarik earned All-America honors at the University of Pennsylvania and played a record 14 seasons with the Eagles. His eight Pro Bowl appearances are a team record. For much of his career, Bednarik played both ways: center on offense, linebacker on defense. In 1960, at age 35, he played almost 60 minutes a game as the Eagles won the NFL championship. In his book Pro Football’s 100 Greatest Players, Hall of Fame coach George Allen ranked Bednarik as his No. 1 linebacker ahead of Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke. Jim Brown, the great Cleveland fullback who butted heads with Bednarik dozens of times, said: “Chuck was as great as any linebacker who ever played.”

2. Bill Bergey (1974-80) - Bergey was 6-2 and played around 245 pounds for most of his career. It was unfortunate that he spent his peak years playing on a defense that wasn’t very good. From 1974 through ’77, he played behind a line that was either pancaked or pushed back into his lap on almost every play. Still, he fought through the rubble and made the tackle.

3. Jeremiah Trotter (1998-2001, 2004-06)- At 6-1 and 262 pounds, Trotter was a powerful force in the middle who blossomed when defensive coordinator Jim Johnson started using him as a run blitzer. Trotter would shoot the gap between the center and guard and blow up the middle of the line. He was one of the few linebackers strong enough to jack up a 320-pound offensive lineman and he did it all the time. Trotter was a fierce competitor who, along with safety Brian Dawkins, provided the emotional leadership for the Eagles defense.

4. Byron Evans (1987-94) - Ryan’s defense called for a middle linebacker who could cover a lot of ground. Because Ryan blitzed outside linebackers and safeties so often, the middle linebacker was forced to drop into the deep middle as a pass defender.

He led the team in tackles (184) in his first full season as a starter, 1989. He had three games that season in which he had 20 or more tackles, including a career high 22 in a Monday night game against the Bears. Like Bergey and Trotter, Evans’ career was ended by a knee injury. He was only 29 when he played his last game in 1994.

5. Dave Lloyd (1963-70)- Lloyd is one of the more underrated players in Eagles history. The Eagles put him at middle linebacker and he found a home for eight seasons. Lloyd was an unusually big linebacker for that time at 6-3 and 245-pounds. He was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 1969 season.

DirtyWudders can speak of the top 4 but only saw 3 and 4 play. Here is Dirty Wudders list of MLB's during our time..

1. Trotter
2. B&E
3. James Willis - Though not a great MLB - DW remembers him for solidifying the win against Dallas in which he intercepted a Troy Aikman pass and pitched it to Troy Vincent for a 104 yard TD.
4. Stewert Bradley (2007 - )
5. Kurt Gouveia (1995)- Slim pickens. He led the Birds in tackles in his one season.

T-Minus 5 Days...

Less than one week - July 27th to be exact - until practice begins for rookies and selected veterans at the Lehigh campus.  I’m pumped. I know the Phillies are the hottest team in baseball right now, and God bless them, but how can you not get excited for football season? I’m not going to turn this into a season preview, just making sure everyone is ready for camp next week.  There is a lot to get psyched for in the coming season: new playmaking rookies, a new Pro Bowl tackle, a happy/healthy Donovan, DeSean Jackson’s 2nd year and much more.  I can’t wait for the season to get underway, let’s pray for a swift, injury-free preseason. What are you most looking forward to in the 2009 season?  Let’s hear your thoughts…

Phils 10 Cubs 1: Rodrigo Lopez allowed 1 run in 6 innings, striking out 5 and scattering 5 hits. Raul Ibanez hit a 3-run bomb in the first and Chooch Ruiz tacked on a 2-run bomb in the second. The Phillies knocked around All-Star pitcher Ted Lilly for 9 runs, 7 earned, over 4 innings. Chad Durbin pitched the final 3 innings for his first save. 9 straight...

A's 14 Twins 13: The A's rallied from 10 down to beat the Twins. Matt Holliday hit a game tying grand slam in the seventh inning and Jack Cust followed with another bomb in a game featuring eight homers. Holliday also had a two-run home run. This was the largest comback in Oakland history. The final out of the game had Michael Cuddyer trying to score on a wild pitch and Oakland pitcher Michael Wuertz making the tag on a VERY questionable call.

Braves 11 Giants 3: Tommy Hanson struck out 11 hitters outdueling Jonathan Sanchez, who was coming off of the only no-hitter of the season. Chipper Jones, Garrett Anderson and Ryan Church all homered for the Braves who stay 6.5 games behind the Phils in the East.

The Morning After

The Phils are rolling and the Mets suck…life is good.

Phils 5 Marlins 0:  Eight in a row, baby! The Phils finished off a sweep of the Marlins yesterday in Florida, with J.A Happ going 7 innings and picking up his 7th win. Happ, who leads NL rookies in wins, pitched at least seven innings for the fifth start in a row. He allowed five hits and lowered his ERA to 2.68. The Phils improved to 29-15 on the road, best in the majors. Jimmy Rollins came within a HR of the cycle, starting off the game with a leadoff triple.  The Phils are cruising right now, I love it.  The only thing I love more is the demise of the Mets – how’s 9 back feel, losers!

British Open:  Tom Watson had The Open Championship in his hands at the 18th hole on Sunday, but his nerves got to him and he shanked a 6 foot putt to win the tournament.  The miss forced a playoff with Stewart Cink, who proceeded to dominate the old man in a 4-hole playoff - Watson was 6-over in the playoff.

Blue Jays 3 Yankees 1: God I hope Roy Halladay is on the Phillies soon. Doc threw a 6-hit complete game yesterday against the Yankees, lowering his ERA to 2.73 and improving his record to 11-3.  He is ridiculous – definitely worth the prospects.   Do it, Ruben.

Green Babes

The Eagles cheerleaders unveiled their new calendar this week in Philadelphia. Apparently the calendar is supposed to raise awareness for global warming, or something. Pffftt, whatever. I guess no one told them global warming is a myth…at least that’s what DW commenter NardDog told me.

Ryan Howard's Top 5 Moments

With his blast last night in Florida, Ryan Howard became the fastest player in MLB history to reach 200 HR's (suck it, Ralph Kiner). Just another record in the already illustrious career of the Phils first basemen. Howard has had an incredible career in the short time he's been with the Phillies, racking up a ROY, MVP and a World Series Ring since joining the club full time in 2004. We as Phillies fans should feel lucky to have a player of Howard's caliber on the team. The guy is a once in a lifetime kind of talent, and without him last year never would have happened. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that Ryan Howard is the man, plain and simple, he is the best. So with that said, here is Dirty Wudders' list of Ryan Howard's Top 5 Moments as a Phillie, feel free to disagree in the comments:

5. September 11, 2004: The first of many…Howard hits his first Major League home run off Doc’s boy, Bartolome Fortunato, driving in his first RBI and scoring his first run in an 11–9 win over the New York Mets. Who could have guessed what was to come? I mean, except for me. I knew. No one else did though.

4. June 20, 2006: Howard has 7 RBI’s, 2 HR’s and a triple in a game against the Yankees. The Phils ended up losing the game 9-7, but Howard’s performance was incredible. Trivia Question: Ryan Howard was the first Phillie to have 7 RBI’s in one game since June 2, 2002. Who was the last player?

3. September 3, 2006: Howard goes 4-4 and blasts 3 HR’s against the Braves, leading the Phils to an 8-7 victory. This was a special day not only for the 3 HR’s, but because the big man became the first Phillie in history to hit 50 HR”s in one season. He finished the game with his HR total at 52. The dude had an incredible year he had in ‘06.

2. ROY: Howard wins 2005 Rookie of the year with 68% of the vote, edging out Willie Taveras and Jeff Francoeur for the honor. His numbers were pretty sick, especially considering he only played in 88 games: .288 AVG, 22 HR, 63 RBI, .924 OPS. Thank god for Jim Thome’s elbow.

1. MVP: Howard wins 2006 MVP Award, garnering 87% of the votes that year. His stats were unreal in ’06: .313 AVG, 58 HR, 149 RBI, 1.084 OPS. Ridiculous.

What did I miss? Do you agree/disagree with my choices? Let's hear it.

The Morning After

Phils 4 Marlins 0: Old Man Moyer (9-6) continued his domination of the Marlins last night, allowing one hit in seven innings and limiting The Fish to just two baserunners. Moyer is 8-0 pitching in Miami and 13-2 overall against Florida. Raul Ibanez isn't wasting any time getting back into his pre-All-Star break form. He homered twice last night, a 2-run shot in the 1st inning and a solo shot in the 4th. Ryan Howard also homered, his 23rd on the year and 200th of his career. Howard reached No.200 in 658 games, the fastest any player has ever reached that milestone. The Phils have won 6 in a row and 10 of 11. I'm pumped.

Astros 3 Dodgers 0: Manny was 1 for 4 with two K's in his first game back in L.A. since being suspended for PED's. The losers in "Mannywood" gave him a standing ovation and chanted his name throughout the game. These are probably the same people out front of Michael Jackson's house crying and pretending he wasn't a pedophile. I hate L.A. Wandy Rodriguez got the win for Houston, going 6 innings and striking out 6.

British Open: Doc's boy, Kenichi Kuboya (who?) is currently leading the pack at Turnberry at 6-under. He fired off a 65 yesterday and is 1-under through 6 in the 2nd round. Tom Watson, yesterday's co-leader, tees off at 8:09am. Tiger is currently sitting at +1, good for 48th place after the 1st round. Other notable scores: Vijay Singh -3, Retief Goosen -3, Jim Furyk E, John Daly E, Paddy Harrington +3, Lucas Glover +9. My prediction: Tiger intimidates the shit out of everyone and is within three strokes of the lead by the end of the day. My 2nd prediction: My first prediction will jinx any chance of Tiger making a run at the leaders. Read More

Flyers at Fenway

It’s official.  The NHL announced yesterday that the Boston Bruins will host the Flyers at Fenway Park on New Year’s Day in the annual Winter Classic.  The outdoor game has been played in previous years at Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium and Chicago’s Wrigley Field.  This should be pretty cool to watch.  Much like Wrigley, Fenway is a sports cathedral, and playing against the backdrop of the Green Monster should be a thrill for the players as well as the fans.

I’m still holding out for a Flyer-Penguins game at Beaver Stadium in State College.  It’s a no-brainer to me.  Rival teams, stadium in the middle of the state, rabid fan bases.  It would be genius…and a great excuse to head up to PSU for a little tailgating.

Turnberry

The Alisa Course at Turnberry will be the site of this year’s Open Championship, only the third time in British Open history the tournament will be played at the fabled course. The 7,204 yard, Par-70 Scottish course is known for being notoriously windy, as are most Open courses, and is famous for weeding out weaker players and producing quality champions. The three Open winners Turnberry produced in the past were Tom Watson (’77), Greg Norman (’86) and Nick Price (’94), arguably the best golfers in the world at the time of their respective victories. .

If the course lives up to its reputation this week, don’t be surprised if Tiger Woods is hoisting the trophy over his head this Sunday. Tiger is playing for his 4th British Open title, the last coming in 2006 at Royal Liverpool. He’s coming off a win at the Memorial Tournament in June, and has been playing solid golf all year. Winner of the last two British Opens, Padraig Harrington has been struggling with consistency over the last year. After winning 3 majors in 13 months, Paddy decided to change his swing – the results have been less than stellar. Going into this weekend’s tournament he's ranked 137th in putting (1.793 putts per green), 182nd in driving accuracy (52.8 percent of fairways hit) and 182nd in greens in regulation (60.06 percent).

No surprise here, but I’m taking Tiger to dominate. I can’t see anyone else winning this week, not the way he has been playing this year.

The Open kicks off at 7am on TNT tomorrow morning.

Naturally, Vegas set the odds at 2 to 1 for a Tiger victory.

You won’t be watching the British Open in HD this year. Pathetic

Mid-Season All-Bum Game

On another slow day in sports in between the ASG and the rest of the regular season, I thought it might be interesting to put together the Worst starting players in the NL and AL during the first half. I am going to put a proposal together for ESPN2 to televise this game, every year as an alternative to the HR Derby…Any ideas for a play-by-play guy? I based my list on 200 or so plate appearances – first half numbers and name recognition, meaning I may choose an underachieving big name over a lesser known name if they are having similar seasons. I just want the NL to have a chance to win a matchup against the AL..

Here are my teams:

AL – C – Dioner Navarro – Rays, .223, 5 HR, 25 RBI
NL – C – Jason Kendall – Brewers - .233, 0 HR, 23 RBI, 10 xtra base hits

AL – 1B – Jason Giambi – A’s, .192, 11 HR, 40 RBI
NL – 1B – Travis Ishikawa – Giants, .269, 7 HR, 26 RBI

AL – 2B – Howie Kendrick – Angels, .239, 4 HR, 28 R
NL – 2B – Kelly Johnson – Braves, .214, 5 HR, 33 R

AL – SS – Nick Punto – Twins, .201, 0 HR, 26 R
NL – SS – Jimmy Rollins – Phillies, .229, 7 HR, 51 R

AL – 3B – Adrian Beltre – Mariners, .259, 5 HR, 36 RBI, 8 E
NL – 3B – Emilio Bonafacio – Marlins, .258, 0 HR, 21 R, 73 K, 13 E

AL - LF – David DeJesus – Royals, .256, 7 HR, 41 RBI
NL - LF – Alfonso Soriano – Cubs, .233, 14 HR, 33 RBI, 82 K, 7 E

AL – CF – Grady Sizemore – Indians, .235, 13 HR, 9 SB, 7 CS
NL – CF – Chris Young – D’Backs, .196, 6 HR, 25 RBI, 73 K

AL – RF – Jose Guillen – Royals, .243, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 4 E
NL – RF – Brian Giles – Pirates, .191, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 18 R

AL – SP – Andy Sonnanstine – Rays, 6-7, 6.61 ERA
NL – SP – Manny Parra – Brewers, 3-8, 6.78 ERA

AL – CL – Kerry Wood - Indians, 2-3, 5.28 ERA, 12 S, 4 BS
NL – CL – Brad Lidge – Phillies, 0-4, 7.03 ERA, 18 S, 6 BS

Damn it! AL wins this one big…

Speak up if there are any glaring omissions.

Rose Reinstatement

ESPN.com is reporting that Pete Rose's reinstatement application to get back into baseball is still under review, and that there is no timetable as to when Selig will make a decision. Pete Rose was banned from baseball after he reportedly bet against his Reds in 1989.

Pete Rose should be reinstated. Bud Selig has already done enough to corrupt baseball, who is he to keep one of the greatest players of all time out of his sport? Pete Rose played baseball the way it was meant to be played. Everyone remembers the infamous Pete Rose head first slide into third base, or him plowing the catcher in the All-Star game. He is the definition of a baseball player. Oh and on top of that he just so happens to have 4,256 hits. He is a 17 time All-Star, he has 3 batting titles, an MVP, and 3 rings. With that resume it is absurd that he is not in the Hall of Fame. The guy gambled, its not like he did anything to enhance his ability, like take steroids.

Bud, you slap players on the hand for taking performance enhancing drugs, but refuse to give Pete Rose a second chance for gambling. Reinstate "Charlie Hustle", he is the model of what and how a baseball player should play the game, regardless of what he does off the field.

If Rose is ever reinstated he is no question a first ballot Hall of Famer, but would he be a unanimous choice?

AL 4 NL 3: In the top of the eighth inning, Curtis Granderson hit a one-out triple to left, and after an intentional walk to Kevin Youkilis, Baltimore's Adam Jones knocked in Granderson with a sacrifice fly off of Heath Bell. That is right National League, the AL gets home field advantage because a player on a last place team knocked in the winning run off of a player on a last place team..

Carl Crawford went 1-3 but robbed a NL home run in the 7th to earn ASG MVP honors. Jonathan Papelbon earned the Win and Mariano Rivera earned his 4th career ASG Save - an ASG record. Heath Bell took the Loss. Shane Victorino went 1-2 with a run scored as the only Phil to get a hit.

Phils: The Phils agree to terms with Pedro Martinez. Martinez is a three-time Cy Young Award winner who has finished in the top four in voting for the award seven times. He went 5-6 with a 5.67 ERA last year with the Mets.

Eagles - Donovan McNabb is hanging out at a topless pool in vegas getting ready for the season. I thought Domowitch told me Camp Donovan was starting in Arizona? I bet you Hank Baskett had something to do with this.

Iverson to Clippers?

The L.A. Clippers are said to have some serious interest in former Sixer and league MVP, Allen Iverson. The first line from the Fox Sports story made me laugh,

Could Allen Iverson soon be feeding the ball to overall No. 1 draft choice Blake Griffin on the L.A. Clippers?’ Iverson feeding the ball? That is hilarious. Why even put Griffin in this situation? Does anyone see this working out well?

Slow day in the sports world yesterday….

HR Derby: Prince Fielder took the title of HR King this year, edging out Nelson Cruz in the final round 6-5. Hometown favorites Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols advanced to the 2nd round, but Fielder and Cruz knocked them out fairly easily. Could this thing get any longer? It took almost two hours just to get to the 2nd round! I’d rather take a Fatboy Fielder HR swing to the groin than listen to Chris Berman’s ‘back back back’ shtick for that long.

Pedro: Pedro Martinez arrived in Philly yesterday and is expected to take a physical today. The signing should become official sometime this afternoon, with the city of Philadelphia collectively yawning over this BS signing. I have to admit, I’ve warmed up to Pedro being the No.5 SP on the Phils over the last couple days. I’m fine with the signing as long as it’s not their last move – and as long as he brings mini-Pedro along with him.

ASG: The All-Star game is tonight – woo hoo! Five Phillies are on the roster for tonight’s game, with Utley and Ibanez selected as two of the starters and batting 2nd and 5th, respectively. Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth will be reserves for National League team. The ASG sucks. I watch it, but it sucks. I’d say it’s the best out of the four major sports, but that’s not saying much when you consider the competition. The AL team has won 11 in a row, with 1 tie mixed in there for good measure. Wake me up on Thursday when baseball is back.
