Howard Continues to Dominate

A nearly two-hour rain delay couldn't keep Ryan Howard from staying on fire last night. The big guy blasted two more HR's in the Phils 4-2 victory over Atlanta, giving Howard 37 bombs on the season and extending the Phils NL East lead to 8 games. Pedro was short changed by the rain for the second time this season, but he looked good for the two innings he was in there. Jamie Moyer looked nothing like his former self again, receiving a standing ovation when he came in and another when he departed after allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings, while striking out five. Brad Lidge picked up his 26th save of the season, putting the Braves down in order in the 9th - it's a long time since we could say that. Only 36 games remaining...Go Phils!

Thanks Cleveland!

PhillyPhaithful has a great new T-Shirt.

"Uh oh. Look who's got a new horse atop the rotation to go with Cole.

Rube and the braintrust scoured the league for an ace. Enter the Tribe, selling off pieces faster than a Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn fastball. Chief Wahoo has bills to pay, kids to feed. Rumor has it they even had to cancel Roger Dorn Appreciation Night. What a shame."

Great stuff by Philly Phaithful. Cleveland blog waitingfornextyear.com has a response. "As Cliff Lee continues to dominate every team that crosses his path, Philadelphia fans are loving every second of it. At least they’re kind enough to thank us, you know?" I’m still waiting for our cards from Milwaukee, LA and Boston. I long for the day we get to make a shirt thanking another city for helping us win a championship. Though a Roger Dorn appreciation night doesn’t sound half bad…"

Can you imagine how they will feel if Cliff Lee starts in Game 1 of the World Series against C.C. Sabathia? Dirty Wudders agrees with Philly Phaithful...Thank You Cleveland!

Thoughts on Vick's Debut

I have to admit, I was pretty pumped to see Michael Vick take a few snaps last night, his first appearance in over two years and his first as an Eagle.  My initial reaction after watching him take a few snaps: a shoulder shrug.  I understand he was only in the game for six plays, but I heard some dopes on the radio talking about a possible QB controversy brewing after that performance.  Give me a break. This is 5’s team, no questions asked.  A 4-4, 19 yd performance in the preseason does not merit consideration for a starting QB spot on a Super Bowl contender. It might get you the 4th quarter of the 4th preseason game, but that’s about it.

I was not a fan of Andy Reid’s use of Vick last night.  I understand he doesn’t want to show too much in the preseason, but why mess with McNabb’s flow in his final tune-up before the regular season.  This was the first-team’s last chance to play a real game together before the September 13th opener, and Reid basically turned the 1st quarter into a circus.  I would have preferred to see Vick come into the game later and take consecutive snaps with the second or third team, mixing in a few designed runs to test his legs.  There was no need for the QB rotation BS we saw in the first quarter, it did nothing to help the team heading into the regular season.  I hope that’s not what we can expect when Vick is reinstated full-time, and from what we heard from Donovan after the game, I’d say he hopes not too.

DW '09 Season Preview: Tennessee Titans

Last Year: 13-3
Key Additions: WR Nate Washington, WR Kenny Britt

Offense: Kerry Collins returns as Quarterback and his job is to manage the offense as he did a year ago. Smash and Dash, Chris Johnson and LenDale White provide one of the top 1-2 punches in the game. LenDale dropped 30 pounds by staying off the Tequila, so we know he is focused, or at least sober. Nate Washington will join rookie Kenny Britt and Justin Gage as the outside threats. Bo Scaife and Alge Crumpler may contribute a catch or two from the TE position. The strength of this team is the offensive line.

Defense: The Titans play a strong cover 2 defense. A solid, yet injury prone front four will miss All-Pro Albert Haynesworth, who commanded double teams. OLB’s David Thornton and Keith Bulloch are strong against the pass and MLB Stephen Tulloch is strong against the run. It will also be interesting to see if the LB’s have the same kind of success without Haynesworth. The emergence of Cortland Finnegan has helped turn this unit into one the leagues elite.

Fantasy Studs: Chris Johnson: 1228 YDs, 9 TDs. Johnson will continue to get the bulk of the carries between the 20’s but may lose scores to LenDale. Johnson may be more of a factor in the passing game as a security blanket for Collins. LenDale White: 773YDs, 15 TDs.

Prediction: 8-8. Look for the Titans to come back to earth this season. Teams will focus on stopping the run and dare Collins to beat them. The Defense will miss Haynesworth.

Top 5 Offensive Tackles

Here is the 9th installment of Ray Didinger's Top 5's. Click here for the first 8

1. Bob Brown (1964-68) – Brown played 10 seasons in the NFL, five with the Eagles, two with the Los Angeles Rams and three with Oakland. His size, strength and mean streak made him one of the most feared linemen in the game. Brown was the Eagles first-round draft pick in 1964 (second pick overall) after an All-America career at the University of Nebraska. He was voted into three Pro Bowls in five seasons with the Eagles. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

2. Al Wistert (1943-51) – This will give you some idea of how much pro football has changed: When Wistert was earning All-Pro honors with the Eagles in the 1940s, his nickname was “Big Ox” and he was all of 6-1 and 215 pounds – or roughly the size of Jason Avant. Wistert was a superb technician who excelled at the trap block, opening holes for Steve Van Buren on the championship teams of 1948 and ’49. He earned All-Pro honors eight times in his nine-year career, while playing 60 minutes every game as both an offensive and defensive tackle.

3. Jerry Sisemore (1973-84) –At 6-4 and 260 pounds, Sisemore was not a massive tackle in the mold of a Bob Brown, but he had great strength and exceptional balance. He was rarely off his feet and had surprising speed which allowed him to make downfield blocks that other tackles could only dream about.

4. Jon Runyan (2000-08) – When the Eagles signed Runyan to a six-year, $30 million contract, some people thought they overpaid for the free agent tackle. As it turned out, Runyan was a bargain. He played nine seasons in Philadelphia and ran his streak of consecutive starts to 192. Runyan is one of the toughest players ever to wear an Eagles uniform. He played last season with a knee injury that would have put most guys on IR. He played most of the 2007 season with a tailbone contusion that made it impossible for him to sit during the team meetings, yet he never missed a game.

At 6-7 and 330 pounds, Runyan is a classic mauler who was ideally suited to the power running game of the Tennessee Titans, but he had to adapt to the West Coast offense in Philadelphia. He had to become more of a pass blocker than a run blocker and while he made no secret of the fact he wished coach Andy Reid ran the ball more, he developed into a dependable pass blocker.

His one-on-one battles with Giants defensive end Michael Strahan were classics. They squared off 18 times, including twice in the postseason. Strahan had the advantage early, but Runyan won most of the later match-ups, which shows how much he improved in the area of pass protection.

Runyan’s aggressiveness which – OK – sometimes extended beyond the whistle, rubbed off on the rest of the O-line and gave it a personality, an edge that really helped.

5. Tra Thomas (1998-2008) – always felt Thomas was underrated by Eagles fans. They knew he was good, but he was so consistent for so long he was taken for granted. Of course, when he wasn’t able to play that one game against the Giants in 2007 and Osi Umenyiora beat Winston Justice for six sacks, it was a reminder of just how valuable Thomas was.

At 6-7 and 350 pounds, with long arms (36-and-a-half-inch sleeves) and quick feet, Thomas was a very good pass blocker. He proved it in the fourth game of his rookie year when he started against Kansas City’s Derrick Thomas and held the future Hall of Famer without a tackle or a sack.

An All-American at Florida State, Tre was the Eagles’ first pick in the 1998 draft. Ray Rhodes passed up Randy Moss to take Thomas with the 11th overall selection. The fans weren’t happy, but it’s hard to argue with a guy who anchored the left tackle position for more than a decade and was voted into three Pro Bowls.

In Dirty Wudders lifetime the list would look like this:
1. Runyan
2. Thomas
3. Stan Walters (DW admits we do not remember him but he played during our lifetime)
4. Ron Heller
5. Richard Cooper

Cooper may be a stretch but DW refused to put Antone Davis on this list.

DW '09 Season Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars

Last Year: 5-11
Key Additions: OT Eugene Monroe, OT Eben Britton, OT Tra Thomas, WR Torry Holt, S Sean Considine

Offense: Offensive staple Fred Taylor is gone, making Maurice Jones-Drew the man is Jacksonville. Jacksonville signed free agent tackle Tra Thomas – I guess that William Thomas thing didn’t stck – and also drafted OT’s with their first 2 draft picks. QB David Garrard lost 20 lbs in the off season in an attempt to find the 20 points he lost on his passer rating last year. Unless Torry Holt can rebound from a disappointing season a year ago, this offense will live and die on the wheels of MJD and David Garrard. Former 1st rd pick, TE Marcedes Lewis may be the number 2 option through the air. He has been effective as a blocking tight end but has the ability to step up as a receiver.

Defense: The Jags need 2007 1st and 2nd rd DE’s Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves to attack the passer if they hope to have a productive Defense in ’09. John Henderson and Rob Meier continue to anchor the interior line. Daryl Smith, Justin Durant and Clint Ingram are the linebackers and Rashean Mathis and Reggie Nelson lead an unspectacular secondary. Sean Considine is the favorite to start at Strong Safety. Ouch.

Fantasy Studs: Maurice Jones-Drew: 824 YDs, 12 TDs: Look for these numbers to increase with the departure of Fred Taylor. One ting that could hurt is teams crowding the box due to lack of other threats. Grab him early.
Prediction: 5-11. A one dimensional offense and an average defense does not bode well in a tough division.

"Lights Out" For Lidge

Ruben Amaro appears to be hinting at the fact that the Phils may not be sticking with Brad Lidge down the stretch. Ruben Amaro told Jason Stark today "We believe in Brad Lidge as a World Championship closer. But when push comes to shove with a pennant on the line, it's our job to win games. And if we feel like there is a better alternative, that's a decision Charlie has to make." There you have it. Coming from the GM himself. This is entirely Charlie's decision now. I know that he is very loyal to his players, but I think that he will make the right decision and hopefully get someone else in there. One thing that I hope the Phils do not do is count on Myers.

Lidge's time as the closer is running out. The Phils have come out and said that nothing is definite, but I think that they are starting to realize that if he hasn't turned it around by now, then its not looking like he will in the near future. The Elias Sports Bureau puts out something called the Elias Impact Rating. This measures the effect a player has on his team's chances of winning. This is based on a per plate appearance basis. Out of the 1,180 players that were measured in all of baseball, guess who came in a distant last behind Todd Wellemeyer? If you guessed Brad Lidge, then you are correct. That's right Brad Lidge is the single worst player in baseball according to the Elias Sports Bureau. What else can you say now? Find someone else that can get the job done.

Myers Looking Good

With the season-long implosion of Brad Lidge, and Ryan Madsen's inability to pitch an inning after the 8th, news from Reading about Brett Myers' performance last night has got to have the coaching staff talking about a possible change.

Recovering from June 4 surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip, Myers made his third rehab appearance last night. Pitching at Double A Reading, he worked the seventh and eighth innings and blew through the Erie Seawolves' lineup: no hits, no runs, one walk, five strikeouts.

He needed just 24 pitches, 17 of them strikes. In his second inning he struck out the side on just 11 pitches. According to the most reliable radar-gun readings, his fastball topped out at 92 and was routinely at 91.

I have to admit, I'm still a little skeptical about Myers' ability to step right into a big league game and revert back to his old form. He's been out of the game for three months now, and striking out five AA bums from Erie is a lot different than striking out Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday. With that said, however, it's certainly worth giving him a shot at this point. Brad Lidge has shown no signs of turning it around, and the Phils don't have any other options to speak of. If he can give them anything resembling a major league closer it will better than what we've been getting for the last four months. I'd welcome his return.

PSU to Play at FedEx in 2010

Penn State and Indiana announced today that the teams will meet at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C. on November 20th next season. It will be a home game for Indiana. This has to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Why would IU want to play a "home" game in a city where their opponents have an enormous fan base?

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley said in a statement. "This game will provide a great chance for some of our players to play close to home and for our fans and the more than 40,000 Penn State alumni in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. to see the Nittany Lions play in person."

I guess Indiana could care less about giving up home-field advantage. I would be pretty pissed if I were a Hoosier football fan...not that Hoosier football fans exist or anything, I'm just saying. Whatever, I'll be there.

Hoffman, Qualls, others placed on Waivers

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports the Brewers have placed all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman on waivers. According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Diamonbacks have placed right-handed closer Chad Qualls on waivers. In my opinion, the Phillies should have interest in either of the two in case Lidge continues to throw like he has. The asking price figures to be high though and I would bet neither get dealt.

Outfielder Mike Cameron, infielder Craig Counsell, catcher Jason Kendall, right-hander Braden Looper and second baseman Felipe Lopez have also been made available.

Lidge

I feel like this is the ninth time we have had this conversation this year, and the first four were no big deal. Now it is the ninth, and nothing has changed. I have about had it with Lidge, even when he does get the save he struggles. He blew his ninth save of the year last night against the Pirates. I mean he didn't even record an out in the 9th inning against a terrible Pirates team. Once again Mitch Williams brought up the fact that he is using his slider way too early in the count, and not relying on spotting his fastball to get ahead. He is 100% right about that, and I wish that Lidge would listen to someone. He needs to get his head on straight, or the Phils need to bring in someone that can close the door. Lidge is a mental midget out there right now. It looked like he gave up before the game was even over last night. After he gave up two base hits and that passed ball, he threw a pitch right down the middle to McCutchen for a walk off home run.

I mean its not time to panic, but it is time to be concerned. The Phils have a nice cushion in the NL East right now, but looking forward into the playoffs you want someone out there in the ninth that isn't going to let one bad play, or one blown call to effect the outcome of a crucial playoff game. Lidge needs to look at some video and stop feeling sorry for himself. Either get the job done or Chalie needs to find someone else who can. This is not Little League where someone's feelings may get hurt, these players are professionals that get paid a lot of money for what they do. Lidge needs to shape up or ship out. You cannot get by for what you have done in the past. You are only as good as your last appearance.

DW '09 Season Preview: Houston Texans

Last Year: 8-8
Key Additions: Brian Cushing OLB, DE Antonio Smith

Offense: The Houston Texans have great potential on offense, led by WR Andre Johnson. Johnson is a beast and can routinely make grabs through double teams. (Egan’s) Steve Slaton led all rookies in rushing last year and comes into the season as the unquestioned starting running back. Slaton is built for this zone blocking attack. There is extra emphasis on QB Matt Schaub to stay healthy this season with backup Sage Rosenfels in Minnesota. Schaub has missed 5 games in each of the last 2 seasons, in which the Texans finished 8-8. A Healthy Schaub could mean a playoff spot. Number 2 receiver Ken Walter and TE Owen Daniels combined for 130 receptions last season. Johnson, amazingly had 115 himself.
.

Defense: Superstar DE Mario Williams anchors this young Defense. DeMeco Ryans is a talented MLB coming off of a somewhat down season. 2007 1st rd pick DT Amobi Okoye is looking to come into his own in 2009. Antonio Smith is primed for a big season at DE taking advantage of O-lines focusing on stopping Mario Williams. An improved pass rush will help an undersized and underrated secondary.

Fantasy Studs: Andre Johnson: 115 Rec 1575 YDs, 8 TDs. Grab him early. Expect his first Double Digit TD season and another 100 grab season. Steve Slaton: 1283 Yds, 9 TDs: Slaton is extra valuable in a PPR league as he may be the second best receiver on the team.

Prediction: 10-6. A healthy Schaub and an improved Defense will lead the Texans to their first winning season in Franchise history. Depth is a concern. A couple of key injuries could have devastating consequences.

Top 5 Guards

Here is the 8th installment of Ray Didinger's Top 5's. Click here for the first 7.

1. Frank (Bucko) Kilroy (1943-55)- He was voted onto various All-Pro teams every season from 1948 through 1954. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade team in the 40's.

2. Ed Blaine (1963-66)- He was a second-round draft pick by Green Bay in 1962, but he was stuck behind two All-Pro guards in Jerry Kramer and Fuzzy Thurston. The Eagles traded for him the next year and he stepped immediately into the starting lineup. He quickly established himself as one of the better offensive linemen in the league.

3. Shawn Andrews (2004-current)- In just three full seasons at guard, Andrews established himself as one of the top players at that position. He was named to the Pro Bowl squad in 2006 and ’07 and he was an alternate in 2005. When he is healthy, the 6-foot-4 and 335-pound Andrews is a physically dominant player who can stop a pass rusher in his tracks by simply extending his arms. Andrews combines that power with surprising speed and agility.

4. Jermane Mayberry (1996-2005) - When Mayberry was voted into the Pro Bowl for the 2002 season he was the first Eagles guard to earn that honor since Walter Barnes in 1951. Hard to believe that half a century could pass without a franchise producing at least one Pro Bowler at that position, but that’s how poorly the Eagles offensive line performed for generations.

5. Walter Barnes (1948-51) – His full name was Walter Lee Barnes, but he was better known as “Piggy.” He had a round face, a stubby 6-foot, 245-pound body and usually the dirtiest uniform on the field. He signed with the Eagles and was a starting guard on the championship teams of 1948 and ’49.

DW doesn't like ranking the offensive lineman as much as other positions. Growing up, the Eagles always had a good/great defense and a bad/pathetic O-line. Oh well, here is DW's List:
1. Andrews - was damn good when healthy.
2. Mayberry
3. Welbourne
4. Herremans
5. Lester Holmes

Lester Holmes can send us a thank you card. How about George Hegamin? Remember him pushing the sled? Bum. Could Artis Hicks be on this list? Ian Beckles..How about Joe Panos..wow

Zeke opens against UNC (or Ohio State)

Isiah Thomas begins his college basketball coaching career against the defending champs (or maybe Ohio State) on November 9th. FIU hired Thomas to a 5 year deal in April. Florida International athletic director Pete Garcia, told FOXSports.com that he intends to honor the contract in which FIU was slated to play against Ohio State in Columbus on Nov. 9 in the 2K Sports Classic.
Garcia said he found out through the release of North Carolina's schedule by the ACC on Tuesday afternoon that FIU would open against defending national champion North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The game against UNC will probably win out due to it being televised on ESPNU.

Florida International gave the former Knicks coach and president a chance to restore the reputation he built as a Hall of Fame player and tarnished through a series of embarrassments in New York.

Thomas has been recruiting very well, getting a 6-8 forward Dominique Ferguson to committ. Ferguson has been rated as high as the 8th best player in the class of 2010.

More Injuries for the Mets

As of yesterday, Johan Santana and Jeff Francour became most recent additions to the LONG list of Mets spending time in the training room this season.  Santana was scratched from his scheduled start tonight with elbow discomfort, and Jeff Francour has a torn ligament in his left thumb.  Francour’s injury is to his non-throwing hand and he is day-to-day. Santana will see a doctor to determine the severity of his ailment - the word surgery has been thrown around in his case, though.  Not that it will really affect the Muts this year, but if Santana were to have elbow surgery who knows what the implications would be down the line.  They’re already thin at SP -  this would not help.

Damn. Could it get any worse for the Mets? Could this string of injuries happen to a more deserving team? Could this make me any happier?  The answer in each case: No, it could not.  F the Mets.

Phils @ Mets 1:10pm

Cliff Lee looks to win his eighth straight start and fifth as a Phillie today against Bobby Purnell and the Mets. Lee is 11-9 with a 2.72 ERA and is 4-0 with a .82ERA for the Phils. Bobby Purnell is 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA. The Phillies look to take 3 out of 4 in New York and to extend their 6.5 game lead over the Braves, who are off today. At 39-21, the Phillies continue to have the best road record in the league. The Muts are 34-31 at Shiti field. Lineups after the jump.

Bruntlett Channels His Inner-Mickey, Phils Win

Crazy game Sunday in New York, here are some of the odd moments from yesterday’s 9-7 win over the Mets at Citi Field:

- Eric Bruntlett turns an unassisted triple play to end the game. Mickey Morandini is not happy.

- Jayson Werth and Chooch Ruiz both hit 3-run homers in the 1st inning

- The Phillies starter, Pedro Martinez, received a standing ovation in the 1st inning.

- The Mets starter, Oliver Perez, was removed from the game and booed in the 1st inning.

- Angel Pagan hit a leadoff inside-the-park HR. Shane Victorino was ignored by the second base umpire after the ball got stuck under the outfield wall.

- Brad Lidge didn’t blow a save.

The loss puts the Mets 15.5 games behind the Phils in the NL East. That makes me happy. The Phils have a 6.5 game advantage over the 2nd place Braves, and with the Fightins traveling to Washington this week the lead should only get larger. Cliff Lee pitches this afternoon for the Phils against the Mets Bobby Parnell – why even bother playing the game? Win. Go Phils.

2 Year Prison Sentence

Plaxico Burress has plead guilty to weapons charges, and has agreed to a 2 year prison sentence, and a 2 year supervised release. This is all for shooting himself. To me this is hilarious. How stupid can you be? Think about it, you are going to jail for shooting yourself in the leg. The sentencing is set for September 22nd. Is there anyway he can return to the NFL? 2 years is a long time, but I guess if Vick can do it then he can too

The Phi-Lee's

Cliff Lee once again proved that he was the best pick up at the deadline this year. Another complete game in the books, and has now pitched two of them since the Phils acquired him. If Hamels can get back on track there is not a better 1-2 punch in all of baseball. Lee has proven that if he is on a good team, he will win games for your ball club. Looking on it now I am not so sure that Halladay could bring to the Phils what Lee has. Since the deadline Halladay has gotten hit around a little bit, and Lee has been unhittable.

With the Marlins losing last night the Phils gained another game on them. Howard hit another home run which makes 5 in 6 games. He is heating up at the right time. The Phils have now won 7 of 8, and will go for the sweep at home tonight. Next stop is Citi Field where they will take on them "Amazin Mets". I think that whole team should take a gender test cause they are all clearly birdless. Blanton is on the bump tonight, and hopefully he can continue to pitch well. The weekend we will see Hamels, Happ, and Pedro.

Man or Woman or Both

The IAAF has requested that Caster Semenya take a gender test. This stems from he/she improving her personal bests in the 800 meter and 1500 meter race. Caster is a track star from South Africa who's identity has yet to be determined. The verification will require a physical medical evaluation, reports from the gynecologist, psychologist, an internal medicine specialist, and an expert on gender. An expert on gender? Its real simple, you either have a bird, or you don't. I can be an expert on that. Officials believe that it is possible though that he/she has had a sex change at some point. This is a lengthy process to determine what it is. The REAL question is what will they do if it in fact is a man. Nick Davies, a spokesperson for the IAAF had this to say about the situation:

"If there's a problem and it turns out that there's been a fraud ... that someone has changed sex, then obviously it would be much easier to strip results," Davies added. "However, if it's a natural thing and the athlete has always thought she's a woman or been a woman, it's not exactly cheating."

I guess this is something to leave for the "experts" to decide. Stay tuned here at dirty wudders for live breaking news on this story.

Phils

Pedro's home debut was ruined due to the rain last night. He gave up a leadoff home run to start the game, but looked good after that striking out three in three innings of work. Moyer came in and shut it down for six innings after the rain stopped. He gave up just two hits over those six innings of work, and came away with the win. Where did this come from? Moyer looked great on the hill last night. If the Phils can get that kind of effort out of Moyer then lets start praying for more rain delays.

The Phils have now won 6 out of their last 7, and they have cracked the .500 mark at home. The Phils have 22 home games left this season and 13 of them are against NL East opponents. Lets hope that the Phils can get hot at home and run away with the lead. All signs point that way, Howard is starting to heat up again. Going into last night he had 4 home runs in 4 games with 9 RBI's. Last night he hit 2 bombs that looked way out, but the wind held them up. September is right around the corner and we all know "Mr. September" gets it going that time of year. Right now he is 3rd in the league in RBI's, looking forward I see him as the league leader in RBI's and homeruns by the end of the year. When Howard hits the Phils win. Lately he is the only one getting it done with RISP.

In what can only be hailed as the most predictable story of the year, Brett Favre will be playing in the NFL again this season. Yawn. According to sources, Brett Favre is in Minnesota right now about to become a member of the Minnesota Vikings - that slurping sound you hear is coming from Bristol, CT.  Prepare yourselves for a bombardment of ‘gunslinger’ pieces on ESPN for the next month, continuing throughout the season until his inevitable shoulder injury in Week 8.  I hate Brett Favre.  Michael Vick and the Eagles organization are probably dancing a jig right now.

Seriously though, if he can just be a mediocre QB this year for the Vikes they could be a dangerous team.  They have, arguably, the best running game in the NFL, and they were pretty damn good last season considering the garbage they had under center.  Their defense is one of the best around, especially against the run, and I just heard Jaws on ESPN saying they are the favorites in the NFC right now.  I don’t know about that, but they are definitely a contender at this point. I don’t really think much of Favre as a QB anymore (or human being for that matter), but he is a huge upgrade over T-Jack and Sage and should improve their offense immediately.

Here is Sec202's thoughts:
How many more times is this guy going to retire? Can you just please go away? I mean you are not good anymore, we saw that last year with the Jets. Just go back to your farm and ride off into the sunset. It is so annoying that you cannot make up your mind. This is just killing your image each year you retire and then decide to come back at the last minute. That press conference that you held when you retired from the Packers for the first time was so pathetic now that you are back for a second time since then. Not only are fans getting sick of this, but I am sure that all of the quarterbacks in the NFL that are getting screwed over do not appreciate it either. You want to go into training camp with the opportunity to compete for the starting job, and just when you think that you won it, this douche decides to change his mind and come back halfway through preseason. I hope the Vikings sign him and he is the back up all year. It would be great to see him on the sidelines with a clipboard in his hands giving Jackson or Rosenfels signs. Just go away and do not come back please. Read More

Update: Strasburg Signs with Nats

The Washington Nationals came to terms with Stephen Strasburg on a 4-year deal worth more than $15 million a year. It went down to the wire, but they finally got it done.  It’s not the $50 million deal Scott Boras was rumored to be asking for, but it’s a record deal for a draft pick nonetheless.  Pretty f’n good for a 22-year-old who’s never thrown a major league pitch.

Strasburg/Ackley

The top two picks in this year's amateur draft have until 12:01am to sign with the teams that drafted them. Stephen Strasburg, the guy that everyone is talking about is the pitcher that throws over 100 mph. Strasburg reportedly has turned down a record 17 million dollar deal by the Nationals with 5 million in "very attainable" incentives. Dustin Ackley who is the infielder/outfielder from UNC was the second overall pick by the Mariners. He is also holding out, and both sides have not come to an agreement yet. Oh and by the way can you guess who both of these players agent is? I will give you a hint, it rhymes with sore ass.

Can you say J.D. Drew? I wonder what the Nats fans will throw at him when he doesn't sign. This is a guy that throws really hard, and has a lot of upside. He also has to keep in mind that he is a pitcher. He still has eligibility at San Diego State, so he can go back to school and re-enter the draft next year. If he decides to go back to school, he will risk the possibility of injury and really screw himself. He needs to sign the contract and move on. He will eventually get paid down the line. This is the big leagues you will get paid if you prove yourself. Sign the contract and play baseball. 17 million guaranteed is more than enough for a 22 year old. If anything Ackley has a little more leverage in his situation due to the fact that he is a position player. His injury risk not nearly as great as Strasburg's. Both players should sign with their respective teams. I mean both Strasburg and Ackley have the chance to be franchise changing players. Why do you want to give yourself a bad reputation before you even play? Read More

Happ, Howard Take Down Braves

J.A. Happ (9-2)  continued to amaze last night, giving up one run on three hits in 7-2/3 innings pitched in the 4-1 victory over the Braves.  Ryan Howard drove in all four Phillies runs, homering twice, including a 3-run shot in the 6th that put the Fightins up for good.  The Phils have won 5 of 6 and head into the off-day holding a 4.5 game lead in the NL East.  Chollie brought Brad Lidge in with two-outs in the bottom of the 9th - not enough time for Lidge to blow one, I guess. - he picked up the one-out save.

Speaking of Lidge, what are the Phils going to do with him? Eight blown saves and a 7.21 ERA make me yearn for the days of Joe Table.  The Phillies cannot be comfortable heading into the postseason with a closer that can’t close, but what are their options?  Do they have someone in-house, or do they need to make a move? Billy Wagner’s name has been mentioned, but he hasn’t pitched since last season, and how effective he would be is anyone’s guess. Brett Myers is supposed to start his rehab assignment this week if his eye is healed up (who injures their eye?), but it would be tough to rely on a guy who hasn’t pitched in months. Ryan Madsen is the guy I would go with. He struggled earlier this season when Lidge was on the DL, but I think he could get it done if Chollie gave him the full-time job. We know he has the stuff, it’s just a matter of whether he has the mentality to be a closer. Regardless of what he did earlier this season, I’d still give him a second chance; it can’t get any worse.

Vick Press Conference

A few notes from Vick’s 11am press conference:

Tony Dungy: “I know the Eagles didn’t do this as a charity measure…I’m proud of the Eagles…proud of Donovan McNabb…”

Michael Vick: “…I’ve done some terrible things, now I want to be part of the solution, not the problem.”

“…whatever is necessary to be an ambassador for the NFL…”

“…I’m considering this my first year…”

“..I had to reach a turning point, prison did that for me.”

“…I don’t think I’d be able to do it...” [be a starter for an NFL team right now].

“…I can’t understand why I was involved with such pointless activity...”

“..Everybody deserves a second chance…”

“…now I understand that people care about their animals…”

Andy Reid: “…I know some people will not agree…I think the majority will…”

Friday Morning Rant

Since we obviously cannot get enough of this Vick talk..Here is an early weekend rant from friend of DirtyWudders, R.H.

I must say I was stunned when I heard they signed Vick. I'm sure everyone was. Totally took me off guard. Dogs on my street suddenly started howling, somehow sensing impending doom. But seriously, from a moral standpoint, I have no problem with them bringing him in. Obviously, what he did was horrific and unspeakable. But he paid his debt to society, much more than many people do for crimes and killings against humans (see: 36 different guys in the NFL and the University of Miami football team).
These people who are outraged and say they will never root for the Eagles again crack me up. Let's hold them to that and make sure they don't watch one minute of the Birds this year. Phonies. Some team was gonna sign him. They shouldn't watch sports period then, or movies for that matter (plenty of bad apples in Hollywood). I also love all these asswipes on talk radio around here that are outraged. God forbid there's a free-thinker that's not politically correct 24/7. I need to get satellite radio.

From a football standpoint, I don't know how much sense it makes. Not much, probably. I just like anything that will make McNabb squirm a little bit. It shouldn't, but it will. Funny how Reid had to make crystal clear during his press conference how Donavan was on-board with the move. Please. Insecurity like this doesn't grow on trees. It's a pretty low-risk move though. If he can't play, just cut him. I find it really hard to believe that Reid and Co. didn't bring Vick in for any kind of workout. And if that's true, shame on them. From what Reid said, he talked to Vick on the phone, he sounded sorry, and that was that. He said he did his "homework". What, did he interview Cell Block D or something? Obviously, they made sure they checked with animal rights groups and what not about this first. I think Reid referenced the "Humane Society" like 37 times last night. And when and why did Tony Dungy become Vick's spiritual mentor?? If he spent half as much time with his son......I'll stop myself before I go straight to hell. Maybe he should mentor his ex-player Marvin Harrison, last seen gun-running in North Philly.

Reid insisted that Vick was a quarterback. No way he's playing QB, not even backup QB. Even in his prime, he made McNabb look accurate. Who's Reid kidding, he's here strictly for gadget plays, which as we know, the Fat Man is a big fan of. Plus he can show us all how smart he is, as evidenced by his smug "I have some things in mind for him" statement (How bout taking a clock-management seminar rather than designing trick plays for a converted QB. Christ. Fat ass). I guess they'll use the wildcat more as well. Although the Eagles didn't seem to really utilize it much last year (and the few times they did it was wildly unsuccessful. DeShean Jackson throwing a pick in the end zone comes to mind). And I have no problem with them using Vick for these types of plays-- if he can still play. Let's face it, he'll probably only be involved in about 20 plays the whole season (unless they can teach him how to play left or right tackle).

I think Reid's new "second chance" philosophy definitely stems from his junkie sons. No way the Birds even considered a move like this 5 years ago. I also think that if the Pats didn't show interest in Vick, the Birds probably would've never looked at him. Reid yearns to be Bellichick.

More on Vick

This is crazy. I woke this morning and felt like I had dreamt the events from last night – it still doesn’t seem real. The Eagles signed Michael Vick… sounds weird, doesn’t it? It was a shocking, controversial and intriguing move the Eagles organization made last night, and I can’t help but think Andy Reid has more up his sleeve than he let on last night. During his press conference, Andy refused to tip his hand regarding what Vick’s role will be on the team, but smiled when a question was asked regarding the Wildcat. That’s the only explanation I can think of as to why the team would make this move. The Wildcat. This is also why I am fascinated by the move – I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, right now I’m just fascinated. Look, I have never been a fan of Michael Vick – never - I thought he was one of the worst QB’s in the league when he was with Atlanta. At the same time, however, he scared the hell out of me when he had the ball in his hands - when he left the pocket my heart would stop. Vick was, arguably, the most exciting player in the NFL in his time. His highlight reel looks like something out of a video game, it’s unreal. Let’s be honest, his traditional QB skills were nothing to write home about, Vick sitting in the pocket and picking apart defenses just didn’t happen. He’s no pocket passer. He’s no Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. He is hardly a QB in my opinion. What he is, however, is an unbelievable athlete with the ability to throw the ball. Vick, in my opinion, is now the most dangerous Wildcat QB in the NFL - he was made for the position.

I’m still in shock. The Eagles are the last team I would have expected to sign a player like Michael Vick. It’s a strange move, one with yet-to-be-determined consequences, but I’m excited to see what plays out. Whether you love the Vick move or hate it, there is one thing I can guarantee…this season just got very interesting.

Vick?

Quarterback Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, his agent, Joel Segal, confirmed to ESPN.com. Chris Mortensen broke into the Steelers/Cards game on ESPN to break the news.

I am not sure what to take of this signing. Is Kolb's injury more serious than they are letting on? Have the Eagles realized that Kolb was not ever going to be a good QB? Is Reid adding him for the Wildcat phenonenon? Does Vick have dirt on Reid's kids? Vick was a good playmaker back in his prime but has never been a particularly good QB. If this town has a problem with McNabb's accuracy - let me introduce you to Michael Vick. I don't know.

I had always put Vick into the same category of what I flush down the toilet a couple of times a day. We will see.

Preseason!

The Eagles kick off the preseason tonight at the Linc, taking on the Patriots in a battle of two of the most talented teams in the NFL – minus the talent. Preseason football is one of the most excruciating things in the world to watch, it’s 10% actual football and 90% a bunch of guys you’ve never heard of (and likely won’t hear of again) running around trying to make the team. Andy Reid has said the starters will play a quarter and a half tonight, so let’s just pray the Eagles can make it through the game without an injury or arrest.  With the injuries to the offensive line mounting, I would expect Andy to do everything in his power to keep Donovan upright – lots of handoffs and quick routes.  I’m most interested to see what Jeremy Maclin and LeSean McCoy can do, as I’m sure most fans are, but other than that I’d prefer if the starters are in street clothes by the 2nd half.  Anyone watching the game tonight?

Stallworth Suspended for Season

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth was suspended without pay for the season by commissioner Roger Goodell. Stallworth was given a 30-day jail sentence and reached an undisclosed financial settlement with the family of Mario Reyes, a 59-year-old construction worker who was leaving his job as a crane operator.

Stallworth caught 38 passes for the Eagles in 2006.

Your conduct endangered yourself and others, leading to the death of an innocent man," Goodell wrote. "The NFL and NFL players must live with the stain that you have placed on their reputations."

Police said Stallworth had spent the night drinking at a Miami Beach club and had a blood-alcohol level of .126, above Florida's .08 legal limit.

I think Goodell did the right thing. 30 days is jail was too lenient. Stallworth deserves this punishment.

Phils

The Phils looked like the team that they are supposed to be last night. It was good to see Utley and Ibanez contribute. Pedro pitched five effective innings as was expected out of him. At certain points he was touching 93mph. That is a good sign that he is 100% healthy, for the time being at least. The Phils are starting to show again that they are the class of the NL. Today they will go for the sweep in Chicago with Lee on the hill this afternoon. There will be live up to the minute posts throughout the game. Make sure that you check it out.

I want to discuss the situation that happened in center field last night with Victo. He goes to catch a fly ball, and as it is about to land in his glove some piece of shit Cubs fan throws a beer on him. Now if this was to happen in Philadelphia it would be all over the news throughout the country. I think that people and the media feel that because Cubs haven't won in 100 years they are allowed to do whatever they want. This is Bush League at its finest. This is an embarassment to the city and to the team. Now dont get me wrong us Philly fans aren't exactly angels. It seems like our antics go national though, and these losers, cause that is exactly what they are in Chicago, will do something like this and it will be talked about for one day and then never come up again. I was reading that the punk blamed Bartman for what he did. Are you kidding me? I mean you Cubs fans really are the worst. You blame everything else but your shitty players and front office for your losing ways. How about this, you lost to the Marlins not because of Bartman, but because you stink! As fans, as players, and as an organization. I was hoping that Victo would have jumped up in the bleachers and stuffed a pillow case full of bars of soap, and beat the shit out of that kid.

On another note did you see that fat panda in San Fran yesterday get all upset because someone pitched him inside? The ball didn't even come close to hitting him.

DW Season Preview: Indianapolis Colts

Last Year: 12-4

Key Additions: RB Donald Brown, HC Jim Caldwell, DT Fili Moala

Key Losses: Marvin Harrison, Tony Dungy

Offense: Not many worries on the offensive side of the ball. Not with all world QB Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai leading the way. Rookie Donald Brown will help supplement the run game and keep D’s honest. Anthony Gonzalez will take future HOF’r Marvin Harrison’s spot opposite Reggie Wayne. Dallas Clark should see an increased workload with the absence of Harrison. The O-line gives Manning enough time to throw but needs to improve on creating holes for Addai and company.

Defense: Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis provide the speed pass rush but the team struggles stopping the run. The interior line is much bigger than in years past. Bob Sanders health is the key to the defense. When he is on the field he erases mistakes, the problem is that he is rarely healthy. He missed 10 games last year, 12 in 2006 and 10 more in 2004. When he played 15 games in 2007, he was the Defensive Player of the Year. Sanders may not be available the regular season opener due to offseason knee surgery. Safety Antoine Bethea has a cracked bone in his hand and will be fitted with a cast.

Fantasy Studs: Peyton Manning: 27 Tds, 4002 yds: Peyton Manning is still an elite QB. He may not be the fist or second QB taken in your draft but you would be wise to expect #1 or #2 numbers. Reggie Wayne:82 Rec, 1145 yds, 6 TDs. Manning’s go to receiver had a decline in numbers after catching 104 balls in ’07 but looks like a good bet to rebound.
Prediction: 12-4. This team barely skips a beat with Jim Caldwell replacing Tony Dungy and reclaims AFC South supremacy.

Herramans down

Andy Reid announced Wednesday that starting left guard Todd Herremans could miss the entire preseason with a "stress reaction" in his left foot, above the arch. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said through a spokesman that a "stress reaction" is "a precursor to a stress fracture." It is safe to say that this has been a tough camp for Herramans. No truth to the rumor that the injury was caused by Juqua Parker stomping on Herramans foot after Herramans got pulled over a week ago.

The Eagles "starting" offensive line will look like this tomorrow night. From left to right; Jason Peters, Max Jean Gilles, Jackson, Nick Cole and Winston Justice. Herramans and the Andrew sisters will not play. I thought Runyan and Thomas were supposed to be the old injured guys? C'mon Birds.

Last Night

The Phils luckily held on last night to win their 4th game since Cliff Lee has arrived. It wasn't pretty though. Harden had a perfect game going into the 7th and Lidge blew his major league leading 7th save of the year. The Phils had a total of 3 measly hits with two of them being home runs. I guess when you are playing the way they are right now, a win is a win right? The Phils need to get their offense back on track, and I know they will eventually come around. Lidge is what scares me. You need someone at the back end of the bull pen to shut it down in close games if you want to go anywhere in the playoffs. How do you go from perfect to shit in one year. How long do you go to him before you realize that it is too late?

I am glad that the Phils got it done last night. That is a big win on the road in Chicago to kick of their road trip. Rollins looked real good blasting a home run off of Harden, and Francisco hit his second homer as a Phil. Utley is still struggling though, and it seems like this offense cannot click all at the same time. One thing that was clicking last night was Sarge's rendition of "Take Me Out to The Ball Game" in the seventh with his grandson.

Ok enough with the game, it was an ugly win. There is one thing that I want to talk about that really bothered me when I was watching the game last night. Wheels. Is this guy the Phillies announcer, or the Cubs announcer? Each game that goes by he gets more and more annoying. I know that you cannot be a complete homer when calling the Phils games, but come on Wheels what is your deal? In the last inning last night it sounded like he wanted the Cubs to win. Jake Fox was up with one out in the last inning, and Durbin walked him on four pitches that weren't even close. Wheels says, "that was an impressive at bat for a rookie". He walked on four pitches! How is that impressive? I mean Namesake could have stood up there and have taken those pitches. Its those types of comments that are just so annoying. Two batters later Soriano comes up and Wheels goes, "Now this guy you do not want to come in on". The first pitch he came in on him and blew it by him for a strike. Its a shame that H.K. passed cause he was the one that kept Wheels' mouth shut during the games. L.A. should be the one calling the games and Wheels should move to the radio.

P.S. Did anyone see Milton Bradley try to pimp that ball that he hit in the late innings? He flipped his bat and started walking down the line like it was out of here. Meanwhile Victo stood there on the track camped underneath it. If I was Pedro I would drill Bradley tonight for doing that. That is Bush League. If you are gonna do that make sure that you got all of it and that it is definitely a home run.

Moyer Is Pissed

Jamie Moyer is not happy with the recent decision for him to move to the bullpen. Fox Sports reported that he is "disheartened" by the move. Moyer also said that before the season he was assured by the front office that he would remain a starter, and there would be no such consideration that he would move to the pen. He also went on to say that he will not let this effect him or the team. In other words he is being a complete professional as usual about the situation. Jamie has the highest ERA by any starting pitcher in the NL.

I can see where Moyer is coming from being a veteran on a World Series contending team. This is just the competitive edge coming out in him. Throughout his career he has done nothing but proved he wanted to win. I don't think that he is at the end of his run just yet. He still has some innings left in him, and he will prove that down the stretch. Nothing is etched in stone so lets see what happens. Pedro has done nothing so far. Moyer should give it some time because I think that he will be back in the rotation by mid September. This time out of the rotation may do him some good. This will give him some time to work on location and anything else that he needs to work on. Also it will be a good time to rejuvenate and gain some strength back. It is a long season and he is not 25 anymore.

On the other hand, Moyer has to realize that he has been struggling a lot this year. Pedro deserves a chance to earn the number 5 spot in the rotation. Chalie is trying to put his team in the best possible situation to win. That's exactly what the Phils are doing right now. This is an experiment that may, or may not work out. Pedro is coming off an injury and he is a year older. Like I said before, over the past two to three years Pedro has become a five inning pitcher and that is it. Lets see what Pedro has on Wednesday and go from there. I mean worse case scenario is he stinks, and Moyer moves back into the rotation well rested.

Phils @ Cubs Preview

J.A. Happ (8-2, 2.74) hopes to right the ship tonight for the Phils as he goes against Rich Harden (7-7, 4.41) and the Cubs in Wrigley. Happ is coming off his most impressive performance to date vs. the Rockies, in which he threw a complete game shutout with 10 K’s and 127 pitches thrown. The Phils, however, are coming off of one of their worst performances of the year, getting swept by the Marlins and letting them creep back into contention - presently the NL East lead is at 3.5. If they’re going to get back on the winning track they need to start hitting with RISP, something that’s been eluding the team for the last couple weeks. The most anticipated game of the week has got to be tomorrow night’s. Pedro Martinez makes his MLB debut for the Phils, and I’m sure there will be tons of buzz surrounding the game. Here’s what the matchups look like in Chicago:

Tonight: Happ vs. Harden

Wednesday: Pedro (0-0) vs. Samardzija (1-1, 6.29)

Thursday: Lee (9-9, 2.65) vs. Dempster (6-5, 4.04)

The matchups seem to favor the Phils, depending on how you think Pedro will fair. Harden his been pitching well lately, but there is no reason to believe Happ won’t continue his hot streak. Cliff Lee is a stud; lock that game in as a win. Go Phils!

Moyer to the 'pen, Pedro to the rotation, Kolb/Cole day to day

According to MLB.com. Pedro Martinez will start on Wednesday bumping Jamie Moyer to the bullpen. Based on our reports on how Pedro has pitched in his rehab starts, we felt it was time to move him into our rotation," Manuel said. "Jamie was a total professional and team player when we let him know of the decision to move him to the bullpen. He has been and will continue to be a very important part of this team." Let's see what you got,

Eagles backup QB Kevin Kolb sprained his MCL in his left knee. He is day to day. Trent Cole left practice with a left shoulder sprain. Neither will play on Thursday game with New England and are considered day to day. Not good timing for Kolb, as the Birds need him to get as much live game work in as possible, in case #5 goes down.

In other Philly news, the Phillies activated Chad Durbin from the DL. He is 1-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 42 appearances for the Phillies this year. To make room for Durbin on the 25-man roster, right-hander Rodrigo Lopez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley

Don't Throw It Back!

It was a rough one in Section 202 yesterday, and the whole weekend for that matter. Yesterday was probably the hottest day ever and to make matters worse the Marlins beat the snot out of us. The Phillies left way too many men on base in the series, and with the exception of Heavy B they got terrible starts on the bump from Hamels and Moyer. Aside from the Phils getting swept I want to talk about another issue that has been bothering me for quite sometime. Why do Phillies fans feel the need to throw the ball back after the opposing team hits a homerun?

Why do we want to imitate a team that hasn't won anything in over a century. I hope that as real Phillies fans, all readers will pass this along to others. This is a tradition that the Cubs fans have started, and they are the only ones that should do it. Throwing the ball back is embarrassing and there is no need for it here in Philly. I mean most of the people that throw it back look ridiculous anyway cause they throw like girls, and barely reach the field. Lets leave that for the Cubs fans. In Philadelphia we only throw batteries and snow balls, and an occasional middle finger. Lets keep it that way. So I am asking all readers here at Dirty Wudders to pass this along to other fans so we can put an end to this. It is not our tradition. Thats like another team singing "High Hopes". How would you feel if you heard the Mets playing "High Hopes" everytime the Mets won. So whoever reads this make sure next time you catch a homerun ball or are sitting near someone who has caught one let them know not to throw it back. I think it starts here at Dirty Wudders, and hopefully one day this will all stop. Be proactive in this and educate the not so intelligent Phillies fans that we don't do that here.
