Series Returns to Philly

Needing a little atmosphere, the World Series shifts from "tame and civil" New York to "loud and rowdy" Philadelphia. Phils fans will be on their best behavior hoping to boost Cole Hamels to game 3 victory. Jimmy Rollins made sure the New York newspapers had something to write about before he left town. (quote after the jump)

"It's really more of a different atmosphere at our ballpark, which is so loud and rowdy. I expected that when I came here, but I heard one big cheer, and that was on a home run. Other than that," said Rollins, whose answer trailed off to a shrug. "Expensive tickets are running loud people out,"

Gotta love it when he stirs the pot. It's the truth though. New York cannot compete with Philadelphia when it comes to passion! Lets go Phils

DWDW College Style - Halloween Edition

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this blog where the three contributors embarrass themselves picking the college and pro games of the week. Here are our picks for Saturday's games.

Namesake’s Picks:

Georgia (4-3) @ No.1 Florida (7-0) Line: Florida (-14.5) O/U: 48
I’m not too overwhelmed by the Gators undefeated season thus far. They’ve won their last three games by totals of 10, 3 and 10, and haven’t looked particularly impressive in any of the games. I don’t think the Bulldogs are going to win outright, but I think they’ll keep it within two touchdowns.
Pick: Bulldogs getting the points

No.10 Penn State (7-1) @ Northwestern (5-3) Line: PSU (-17) O/U: 47
I am officially back in love with PSU after their manhandling of Michigan last weekend in The Big House. The offense finally looked dominant, and I expect them to keep rolling in Northwestern on Saturday. As long as PSU isn’t looking ahead to next week’s showdown with Ohio State, this game should be a breeze.
Pick: PSU in a romp.

Doc's Picks:

No. 3 Texas (7-0) at No. 13 Oklahoma State (6-1) Line: Texas (-9.5) O/U: 53.5

Dez Bryant is suspended for the year and that should eliminate the possibility of an upset. The last two years have been decided by 3 and 4 points, both in Longhorns favor. Texas has had a ho-hum season so far and I think they make believers here.

Pick: Texas and the Under

No. 4 Southern California (6-1) at No. 12 Oregon (6-1) Line: USC (-3) O/U: 49

No real feel here but my hatred for USC is showing its face. Oregon is a tough place to play and the Ducks have taken 2 of the last 3 here against USC. I don't believe USC has the ammunition of past years.

Pick: Ducks taking the points

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this Blog where the contributors embarrass themselves picking that week's games against the spread. Here is our pick for the Friday night college game.

No. 20 West Virginia (6-1) at South Florida (5-2) Line: WV -3 O/U: 47

USF has lost 2 in a row after a 5-0 start and West Virginia is a 4th Quarter collapse away from being undefeated. I believe WV is significantly better than South Florida but they are 1-7 against winning teams in their last 8. F' the trends, take West Virginia.

DW Pick: WVU and the Over

Clifton Phifer Lee

What a game last night. Clifton Phifer Lee pitched his guts out, and the Phils already stole home field advantage away from the Yankees. That was by far the best pitching performance that I have ever seen in the World Series in my lifetime. I was glad to see that Utley woke up with two bombs (He is the man). He really needed that week off. That is the third straight time that the Phils beat Sabathia in the last 2 years. To be honest with you I don't see it. Why does everyone think he is unhittable? A-Rod was being A-Rod last night with a goose egg and a couple of K's. FU A Rod, and Texiera looked pretty good too. The "Yankee Faithful" really proved themselves last night by leaving in the 7th inning. What an emabarrassment to New York. Everyone talks about the Yankees being the greatest fans, well how is that when your mayor is sleeping in his seat, and the rest of the stadium is empty in the 8th inning. To be honest I was not impressed with the fans. Phillies fans are way louder and way more intimidating than those bitches up in New York. Tonight we go into a pivotal game two. Pedro vs. Burnett. This could really put a strong hold on the series with a Phils win. Burnett is a head case with an ERA just under 5in the postseason. Pedro looked great against the Dodgers, but that was then, this is now. Lets get it done Pedro

I just want to take a second to talk about what I am seeing in every article that I have read today. Every freakin one says "The Phils STUN New York". Why is it such a surprise that the Phils won? They are a phucking good team, this is no surprise that they beat the Yankees. We beat that fat shit last year in the playoffs, then again in the regular season, and then again last night. There is nothing surprising about beating him. Lets be honest here this is not a weak Twins lineup, or an old Angels lineup. This is a lineup that can put up runs anytime they feel like it. This lineup is built around beasts like Howard and Utley, not Nick Punto and Michael Cuddyer. So f off National media, you better get on board now, because the Phils are the team of this decade. Get off the Yankees nuts, they haven't won anything since 2001. Regular season records don't mean shit when you don't win the World Series. Maybe when the Phils take down the Yanks they will finally get the attention they deserve.

P.S. FU New York

The Morning After

Here is what you missed while watching Cliff Lee dominate the Yankees.

Magic 120 – 76ers 102: Dwight Howard had 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Magic, who are on track to go 82-0. Mo Speights came off the bench for 26 points. Andre Igoudala scored a whopping 8 points on 3-11 shooting and he wants the fans to know that he “is one of the best players to ever come to the franchise”

Raptors 101 - Cavs 91: Toronto overcame LeBron's 25th career triple double sending the Cavs to an 0-2 start. Andrea Bargnani scored 28 points, Chris Bosh had 21 points and 16 for the Raptors. The Cav's have lost 2 games, and the Russians are trying to steal LeBron from them. Tough week for Cleveland.

Boston 92 Charlotte 59: Impressive performance by the Bobc's. Yahoo had Derrick Brown as the top performer and he scored 9 points on 4-9 shooting. Stepen Graham and Gerald Wallace were both -33, in the Hockey +/- stat, which I love by the way. -33!! KG was +34. Charlotte stinks, Boston is pretty good.

Who You Got?

Don’t know if you heard or not, but there’s a baseball game tonight in the Bronx. It feels like months since the Phillies dispatched of the Dodgers in the NLCS, but after all the waiting it’s finally here. World Series Game 1 in New York tonight: two former Indians on the mound, MVP-caliber talent in the field, and 50,000 scumbags in the stands. It doesn’t get any better than this! GO PHILS!

The only question that matters now: Who wins? How many games? Who’s your MVP?

Namesake: Phils beat Sabathia tonight, take two in Philly, and take Game 7 in the Bronx – mark it down. Taking into consideration the issues the Phillies have had with inconsistent starting pitching (Hamels), I really feel like tonight’s game is crucial to the Phillies success in this series - they need to win when Cliff Lee pitches. If they lose tonight a ton of pressure is put on the shoulders of Pedro Martinez, and I’m not saying he isn’t up to it, but it would make me nervous as hell. Regardless, I’m confident that they get it done – no doubt about it. Howard will continue his dominance, Lidge will be lights out, and Chase Utley is going to become the next great Yankee killer. FUNY!

Phils in 7. MVP: Cliff Lee.

Doc: This is what we’ve been waiting for! I haven’t gotten any work done in a week. Key for the Phillies is to steal a game in NY. If they can win tonight, NY would be spooked (down goes C.C.) and it takes the pressure off Pedro (not so much worried about Pedro but more me watching Pedro, down1-0) and I can see the Phillies winning it at home. Howeva – here is how I see it. Yanks take Game 1, 3-2. The Phillies answer and win a bullpen game, 8-5. Cole outlasts Pettite, 4-2 in Game 3 and C.C tops Blanton 6-3 in Game 4. Now it’s a 3 game series with Philly favored pitching matchups in 2 of the 3. Game 5, Lee beats Burnett, 5-1. Pedro vs 3-day rest Pettite (if Clemens misremember’s not to inject him) or Gaudin in Game 6. Phils win 10-4!

Phils in 6! MVP: Jayson Werth

Sec202: I know that I said before that I liked the Phils in 7, but I did some thinking and played it out in my head. I have to change my mind on this one. I know everyone is going to think that I am crazy, but I am standing by our shortstop on this one and going with the Phils in 5. Everyone keeps saying that it is impossible to beat CC 3 times in a series. Well who says that we are facing him three times? We will face him in game 1 and game 4. We take 1 in New York, and take the rest in Philly. For the Phils to win in 5 they only have to beat CC once. The rest of the Yankees starters are not that good. MVP is going to our shortstop. Remember last time he made a prediction against a New York team? What happened? That’s right New York you are just another New York team that will become a notch on Jimmy’s belt.

Phils in 5. MVP: Jimmy Rollins

A ROD

I am so sick and tired of hearing about this steroid using piece of shit Gay Rod. I don't care about who he is dating, even though Kate Hudson is a cover up because he really blows dudes. All of the sudden analysts and Yankees fans think he is Mr. October because he had a few hits against a terrible Twins team, and the Angels. Look what he has done throughout his career. He has sucked in the past and it has taken him years to finally contribute in the postseason. I don't care how much talent this freak has. He took steroids, and he is a CHOKE ARTIST! This is his first World Series in his career, so I am sure that his ass will be tight, and he will want to dig himself a hole because he can't handle pressure. All of the analysts are saying that A Rod is finally "relaxed" and that is why he is hitting. So that means it took 5 years for him to get relaxed in the playoffs. Well I have news for you pal, the World Series is whole different beast to tame.

Remember when this bitch was crying about the Yankees fans booing him? What is he going to do when he comes to Philly? If you think Manny got it bad in the Dodgers series, I can't imagine what will happen to Gay Rod. He is almost guaranteed to start taking steroids again after his trip to Philly.

FU A Rod! You are a loser, you haven't won anything in your career. You are a shitty teammate, and even a worse human being. You cheated baseball to win MVPs, you made an ass of yourself about your contracts, women (strippers), and more importantly your postseason career. So good luck in the series I hope you SUCK!

Fly Guys

With all the distractions going on this time of the year, (World Series) I have not had the opportunity to sit down and actually watch a Flyers game all year. In fact the closest I have come to having anything to do with the Flyers this year was seeing Richards, Emery, and Carter standing in line for Game 1 of the Division Series against the Rockies. Last night I was getting sick and tired of listening to the MLB Network sucking off A-Rod (My thoughts on him coming later today), so I flipped over to the start of the Flyers and Capitals game. Now I have heard that the Flyers were pretty good this year, but like I said I haven't really watched so I didn't know first hand.

Although they lost 4-2 to the Caps, I was pretty freakin impressed with how good the Flyers are. I mean when was the last time you can remember when the Flyers were in the top ten in the league in penalty kill, or on the power play? This year they are top ten in both. (5th in Penalty Kill) I was shocked at how fast this team is, they won almost every loose puck, and they can hit hard. Are the Broad Street Bullies back? This is a tough physical team that can skate with anyone in the league. They have goal scorers on every line, and Pronger really helps out on defense. For the last couple of years one of the Flyers major weaknesses was the ability to play defense. This year, with Pronger, Timmonen, and Coburn holding down the defense this team can be real dangerous. Forget last nights loss, hockey is a long season. I mean everyone pretty much makes the playoffs anyway. This team will definitely be one of the contenders for the cup.

The Morning After

Caps 4 Flyers 2: Alexander Semin scored the go-ahead goal and Alex Ovechkin added 2 goals for the Caps, who won their fifth straight game. Scott Hartnell and Braydon Coburn scored the goals for the Flyers, who blew a 2-0 lead. The Flyers out shot Washington 43-35. Simon Gagne has 2 small hernia's.

Boston 95 Cleveland 89: Pierce, Allen and Garnett combined for 53 points leading the Celtics over the Eastern Conference favorite. LeBron scored 38 points and added 8 assists. Shaq chipped in with 10 and 10 in his Cleveland debut.

L.A. 99 L.A. 92: Kobe dropped 33, 8 and 4 in the season opener for the Lakers.Andrew Bynum had a great game scoring 26 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. The clippers stink.

'09-'10 Preview: Pacific

Pacific: The Lakers will run away with this division, with maybe only the Suns also finishing over .500. The Clippers, Warriors and Kings and bad, worse and terrible.

1. Lakers: The rich get richer. Ron Artest joins the champs and on paper the move looks like a good one but can he replace the intangibles that Ariza brought? It reminds me of Rodman joining the Bulls. Can Kobe manage Artest?

2. Suns: Nash and Stoudemire give it one last go. Probably this teams last shot but they will be lucky to get into the playoffs. They probably sneak in because they get to play the rest of this division.

3. Clippers: Griffin shattered his kneecap and that shattered the Clips chances of competing.

4. Warriors: A couple of scorers on this team but nobody to pass or defend. Two somewhat important things. How is this team not picked to finish dead last?

5. Kings: This is why. Name me two players on the Kings. I can’t either and I’m looking at their roster. 17 wins last year – they need to get lucky to reach that mark. I’m saying 14

Player to Watch: Stephen Curry – the guy can spot up from anywhere on the court. He may have to with all of the gunners on Golden State.

Player to Hate: Kobe

'09-'10 Preview: Southwest Division

Southwest:  Last year this was an extremely competitive division, with 4 of 5 teams making the playoffs and three teams finishing with 50+ wins.  San Antonio, Dallas and New Orleans will most likely finish around the same totals as last year, with Houston probably taking a major step backwards. Expect San Antonio to land in the top spot again this year.

  1. San Antonio: Added Richard Jefferson to an already potent lineup.  They’ll dominate again this year.
  2. Dallas: Not much different from the ’08 team.  Jason Kidd is 36 years old now, and how much he has left in the tank is up for debate.
  3. New Orleans: CP3 is the man, but he’ll have his hands full competing within this division.
  4. Memphis:  This team has tons of potential moving forward, with the likes of O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay and Hasheem Thabeet coming up the ranks.  This year will be a maturing season for the squad, but expect big things in the next year or two.  Oh yeah, they added some dude named Iverson in the offseason.
  5. Houston:  No McGrady and no Yao for at least 30 games to start the season. This team will be in the toilet all season.

Player to Watch: Allen Iverson.  How will Philly’s favorite son fare coming *gasp* off the bench? Is it over for A.I.? I say yes.

Player to Hate:  Marco Jaric. Why? Because of his wife. You will be pleased/infuriated when you click on the link.

Phils-Yanks Position-By-Position

I. Am. Pumped. Tomorrow night it is on, Phils fans. Phils-Yankees for all the marbles. For the Phillies, a chance to make history, a chance to talk dynasty, a chance to say ‘Fuck you, New York’ and not direct our hatred towards those fruits in Flushing. It’s almost here…one more day until the beginning of the end for the Yankees, one more day until the Phillies make their triumphant defense of the world title. Back-to-back…I can feel it!

Here are our thoughts on the position-by-position matchups for the 2009 World Series:

1B

Ryan Howard .355 2 HR 14RBI

Mark Teixeira .205 1 HR 5 RBI

Advantage: Phils. Teixeira had a great regular season, but hasn’t done shit in the postseason. Howard, on the other hand, cannot be stopped. Dude has been a beast all postseason.

2B

Chase Utley .303 1 HR 2 RBI

Robinson Cano .229 0 HR 5 RBI

Advantage: Phils. Utley is the best in the game, hands down, and to even consider taking Cano over him would be sacrilegious. Eskin, you jerk off.

3B

Pedro Feliz .161 1 HR 2 RBI

Alex Rodriguez .438 5 HR 12 RBI

Advantage: Yanks. Whatever. Steroids.

C

Carlos Ruiz .346 1 HR 7 RBI

Jorge Posada .258 2 HR 3 RBI

Advantage: Phils. Chooch has continued his postseason dominance at the plate throughout ‘09. Posada is fine, but he can kiss my ass. This is the strangest website I may have ever seen.

SS

Jimmy Rollins .244 0 HR 3 RBI

Derek Jeter .297 3 HR 5 RBI

Advantage: Yanks. This is a tough one. Jeter is one of the best ever, and I just punched myself in the nuts for taking him over one of the best Phils ever, but I have to go that way. I was tempted to call this matchup a Push, but I’ll go with Jeter because of his credentials – and because I want to nail his girlfriend.

LF

Raul Ibanez .226 1 HR 9 RBI

Johnny Damon .238 2 HR 5 RBI

Advantage: Push. If I had a gun to my head I’d take Ibanez, but neither LF’er has been setting the world on fire in the postseason. Ibanez’s 9 RBI’s are impressive, though.

CF

Shane Victorino .361 3 HR 7 RBI

Melky Cabrera .314 0 HR 4 RBI

Advantage: Phils. Why the NY Post would dare tempt Victo while he is so hot at the plate is beyond me. Dopey fucking New Yorkers - they’ll get what’s coming to them.

RF

Jayson Werth .281 5 HR 10 RBI

Nick Swisher .125 0 HR 1 RBI

Advantage: Phils. Just looking at Nick Swisher makes me want to knock his fucking teeth out. Plus he sucks.

GO PHILS!!!!

'09-'10 Preview: Northwest

Northwest: Three teams won 48 or more games in this top heavy division last year. Again Denver, Utah and Portland figure to battle it out this year. The Thunder have a very talented team, most of whom cannot drink yet. The T’Wolves are already scouting more point guards to draft next year.

1. Blazers: Deep, deep team. Brandon Roy is a star and now he has Andre Miller to get him the ball. LaMarcus Aldridge is one of the better big men in the league but the other big man is where the question are. If last year’s Greg Oden is what we should expect then there may be a limit on how good this team can be. If he developed into the hype he had a few years ago, the sky is the limit. Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw provide spark off the bench.

2. Jazz: Not much change for this team that won 48 games last year. This team has chemistry and really knows how to play together. One potential hurdle is if Boozer continues to bitch about wanting a trade. Paul Millsap was re-signed for that reason and the Jazz didn’t miss a beat when Boozer was down last year.

3. Nuggets: Chauncey Billups taught this team how to win last year when he replaced Allen Iverson. Arron Affalo and Ty Lawson provide needed depth at the guard positions. The Nuggets should be right there all year.

4. Thunder: There is a whole lot of young talent on this team. They would definitely contend for the ACC or Big East title. They might be a year or two away from contending for a division title though.

5. T’Wolves: The T’Wolves will struggle. Al Jefferson and Kevin Love can be effective big men but how will they adapt to Kurt Rambis’ up tempo style?

Player to Watch: Greg Oden: He shed lbs in the offseason and is focused on not being such an asshole. Is he a black Greg Ostertag or Dikembe Mutombo with an offensive game?

Player to Hate: Carlos Boozer: Talented as hell but whines like a bitch. Now he is crying his way out of Utah.

'09-'10 Preview: Southeast

Southeast Division: This is not a bad division. Orlando should remain an elite team in the NBA and Atlanta has a chance to be very good. The 3, 4 and 5 spots are up for grabs but the guess here is that Larry Brown takes the next step in getting Charlotte to the playoffs while the Heat prepare for the departure of D-wade. The Wizards should not be very good. If they are it will be because Arenas has taken the next step into one of the game’s top players.

1. Magic: There was a lot of turnover for a team that reached the NBA Finals last year. Gone are Hedu, Courteney Lee and Skip to my Lou. Replaced by Vince Carter and Brandon Bass. This should continue to be one of the elite teams if Jameer Nelson can fully recover from injury and Vince Carter can fit in to the team. Hedo will be missed if Carter starts bombing away.

2. Hawks: Solid team top to bottom. Solidified the bench by adding Joe Smith, Jamal Crawford and Jason Collins. If Marvin Williams can continue to develop and Josh Smith can stay focused, this team could very well challenge Orlando.

3. Bobcats: Larry Brown’s team has some talent. They need consiatant PG play from Felton and/or Augustin and somebody other than Wallace to score. Boris Diaw needs to develop consistency. Gerald Henderson could impact the team right away.

4. Heat: It’s been an interesting off-season for Michael Beasley. We know about the rehab and the passing out on the boat but what we don’t know is if he played any basketball. This team should hover around the .500 mark again.

5. Bullets: This team will go as far as Gilbert can take them. He played 2 games last year, lets hope he improves on that. Apparently Brandon Haywood is still in the league.

Players to Watch: Jameer Nelson. How does he recover from last year’s injury. He hurried back for the Finals but was very rusty. The guy is a leader and it will be important for him to incorporate Vinsanity into the game without Superman getting pissed.

Players to Hate: J.J. Redick

World Series Pitching Matchups

Here are the pitching match ups for the World Series. This is what we have been preparing for since pitchers and catchers in February. I can remember one of the first posts that I made on this blog was about the Phils being good enough to win right now. Back then there was no Lee, and Myers was in the rotation. Moyer was a starter, there was no Pedro, and Blanton was pitching like shit. That was in May, now it is October and the Phils find themselves in the World Series. Ruben Amaro made all the right moves, especially not waiting around for Halladay and getting Lee. Their starting pitching has been huge down the stretch, and they find themselves entering into the world series against the team with the most championships of all time. Here are the expected pitching matchups for the World Series.

Game 1 Lee vs. Sabathia
Both pitchers have been incredible in the playoffs, but Lee has an ERA of 0.74 in the postseason. These two have both won Cy Young awards, and were teammates back in Cleveland. What a way to kick off the World Series with this matchup. This is gonna be a battle in game one, but the Phils have had success in the past against Sabathia. Remember the 2008 NLDS? Remember back in May when the Phils took it to Sabathia in Yankee stadium? Look for the Phils to come out swinging early against this load of shit. The slight edge goes to the Phillies in game one.

Game 2 Pedro vs. Burnett
Pedro is an experienced postseason pitcher, and I know he pitched great last series, but that was in LA in 85 degree weather. I am not so sure that this is a good idea, pitching Pedro in New York. Then again, Charlie has proven us all wrong so many times this year. Expect "Who's Your Daddy Chants" coming from those weak New York fans. Pedro just has to pitch good enough to keep the Phils in the game though. Burnett is hittable. The Phils hit him around pretty good in the regular season, and he has been subpar in the postseason. The edge here goes to the Yankees, unless Pedro can pitch like he has been, but that will remain a mystery until game 2.

Game 3 Hamels vs. Pettite
Well this game all depends on what Hamels shows up. Citizens Bank will be so loud, and if Hamels cannot get fired up for this game , then something is wrong. Pettite is the definition of experience in the postseason. On Sunday Pettite passed Smoltz for the most postseason wins of all time. He also has the best pick off move in baseball. This will make it very tough for the Phils to manufacture runs. Unlike Pettite, Hamels doesn't take steroids, so the edge goes to the Phils

Game 4 Blanton vs. Sabathia
This will be an interesting matchup. Can the Phils beat Sabathia twice this series? I think that Blanton will be on a short leash, and Charlie will revert to matchups if he gets into trouble. Sabathia, going on three days rest, will pitch effectively enough to get through six. The Yankees get the edge in game 4.

After game 4 who knows what the future will hold for the series.

The Bullpens:
Everyone is talking about the Yankees bullpen being so good. Well they suck. I mean Joba Chamberlain sucks, Phil Coke is their lefty specialist who sucks, and Phil Hughes is an overrated prospect, oh and he sucks too. You have to be ahead in the 9th to get to Rivera, and that could pose a big problem for the Yankees. Rivera is a good closer, but so was Broxton and Street.

The Phils are in the same boat as the Yankees in this one. Lidge and Madson are question marks, and have been all playoffs. Lidge still has something to prove from the regular season, and Madson needs to be the setup man we have come to know over the past two years. There is no edge to either team in this area. This is a draw. I think that the series will come down to which pen pitches better. Lidge is the key to the Phils winning.

'09-'10 Preview: Central

Central Division: Much like the Atlantic Division, the Central Division consists of Cleveland and then everybody else. This season will be nothing more than a tune-up for the playoffs for the Cavs, and as long as LeBron is in town that’s the way things will stay. Depending on the maturation of Derrick Rose, the Bulls may be able to add some wins to last season’s tally, but they finished 25 games behind the Cavs in ’08 so thinking they can compete for the division is wishful thinking. The rest of the slop in this division resides in the same 30-40 win range, and expecting anything more would be foolish.

1. Cleveland: Added Shaq in the offseason to attempt to neutralize Dwight Howard in the playoffs. Personally, I don’t think he’ll have too much of an impact on the season’s outcome. Regardless, the Cavs will cruise this season and battle for one of the top seeds in the East.

2. Chicago: If Derrick Rose can elevate his game to superstar status – which is definitely possible considering his playoff performance last season – the Bulls could be decent this year. I still find it hard to root for a team this guy is on. Who knew Doc’s boy, John Salmons, averaged 18.3 ppg last season? Not me.

3. Detroit: Added Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to the roster in the offseason. The Pistons now will be playing with a 3-guard rotation consisting of Gordon, Rip Hamilton, and PG Rodney Stuckey. Stuckey is the only PG of the three, so I’d expect him to get a majority of the minutes. They should be better than last season, but not great.

4. Indiana: Tyler Hansborough will try to prove that he’s the NBA’s great white hope – doubt it. He’s listed right now as the 3rd PF on the Pacers behind Troy Murphy and Josh McRoberts. I don’t see this ending well.

5. Milwaukee: Wow. They suck. Check out this lineup.

Players to Watch - Derrick Rose…see above. Pistons Guards: It will be interesting to see how the 3-guard rotation works out – they definitely have some talent there but we’ll see how they mesh. Shaq: I don’t think he makes a huge difference. We’ll see.

Player to Hate: Joakim Noah – do a Google image search on him and tell me you don’t want to punch him in the face.

'09-'10 Preview: Atlantic Division

Atlantic Division: Boston Celtics and then everybody else. When the Celtics show up on Opening night, they will have clinched their 4th straight division title. In what used to be one of the best divisions in the NBA the Atlantic has not had 2 teams finish above .500, in the same season since ’04-’05. How is that for pathetic? Toronto and Philadelphia should compete for playoff berth’s, the Knicks have molded their roster so they can become the “LeBrons” next year and the Nets are “hooking” themselves for $25,000 per game.

1. Boston Celtics: Maybe the best starting 5 in basketball. Depth at PG could be an issue if Rondo goes down. Rasheed adds versatility off the bench but this team needs Garnett to come back to pre-injury form. This may be Boston’s last shot with this core.

2. Toronto Raptors: Adding Hedo Turkoglu to join Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani should give Toronto one of the better front courts in the Eastern Conference. It was a desperate attempt to get Bosh to stay put after the season. Expect Toronto to have a decent year, Bosh to leave as a free agent, and Hedo to turn into untradeable dead weight in the next 2 seasons.

3.Philadelphia 76ers: Stuck in limbo. If this team wanted to win, they should have kept Andre Miller. If this team wanted to lose, they should have traded Elton Brand and/or Igoudala. They don’t know which way to go and this is what we are stuck with. 38-43 wins and a quick first round exit.

4.New Jersey Nets: Devin Harris is a good player. Brook Lopez and Courteney Lee have the potential to be good players. The rest of the team? They stink. Namesake’s boy Yi is horrendous. The Knicks and the Nets fight until the end for last place. Who wants it more? Ot is it- Who wants is less?

5. New York Knicks
: It is a contract year for just about everybody on the roster. This team has not competed in years. Their only focus has the been the special ’10 free agent class. This is what David Stern and company has turned the NBA into. If your team is not elite, you might as well tank.

Players to Watch – Andrea Bargnani C, Tor: Came on late last year. Chris Bosh owns the paint so Bargnani has the space to shoot from outside. Will never live up to his top overall draft slot but has the chance to be better than most soft European big men. Still soft but not quite Darko

Player to Hate: Rajon Rando – not sure where this guys thinks that he gets to have an ego. Shut up and get the ball into your scorers hands.

The Birds take on Sherm Lewis and the Redskins tonight in what should be an easy victory for the Eagles. I am fairly confident the Birds will dominate, but after last week's game who the hell knows what team will show up. Leave your comments after the jump.

Phillies vs Yankees

Well here we are Phils fans, another World Series, and another October bender. Wednesday cannot come soon enough. If you are a Phils fan, it doesn't get any better than this. Taking on the team that has a $200 million payroll, a $1.5 billion stadium, and a complete douche bag for an owner. I think that I speak for the city of Philadelphia when I say that there is not another team that I hate more than the Yankees right now. So all of you front running Yankee fans out there that plan on going to Citizens Bank Park for the games, prepare to feel very uncomfortable. CBP will be a very hostile environment that does not tolerate losers that only like a team because they have won the most championships. I know if any of you will be sitting in section 419 for game 5 I will personally make you feel unwelcome.

Analysts are already talking about both bullpens. Obviously they are saying that the Phils have question marks, which is true. They are also saying that the Yankees bullpen is so good, with the spitballer Rivera and company. Do you mean to tell me that Joba Chamberlain is going to shut this offense down? He is the biggest stiff since Adam Eaton. Oh, and didn't the Dodgers have the best bullpen in baseball? What happened in that series? The key to this series will be Chase Utley and Brad Lidge. Utley needs to get back on track, hitting the ball to the gaps and driving in runs. Hopefully with this week off Chase can bounce back, and start hitting (and fielding) like he normally does. Brad Lidge also needs to continue his post season success. So far he has three saves and a win, with 0.00 ERA. If he can continue to shut the door, and get big outs late in the game the Phils will have a really good chance to win this thing.

P.S. It could not get any worse right now for a Mets fan. Their division rival and their hated foe are playing each other in the World Series. I think the Mets have officially hit rock bottom, and I love it!

What Happened Then...

Now that the Phils will officially be taking on the New York Yankees this Wednesday in the World Series, I thought we’d take a look at what happened earlier this season when the two teams met. Interestingly enough, the Phils will be taking on the same three pitchers in the Fall Classic – Burnett, Pettite and CC. Here’s what happened back in May…

May 22nd: Phils 7 Yanks 3 W: Myers L: Burnett

On the Mound:

Myers, 8IP 8H 3ER 0BB 5K

Burnett, 6IP 8H 5ER 2BB 7K

At the Plate:

Werth, Rollins and Chooch all homered off of Burnett in the win. Jeter and Teixeira both homered off of Myers in the 8th inning, and A-Rod hit one earlier in the game. Phils dominated.

May 23rd: Phils 4 Yanks 5 W: Veras L: Lidge

On the Mound:

Happ, 6IP 4H 2ER 0BB 4K

Pettite, 7IP 5H 4ER 2BB 5K

Lidge, 0.1IP 3H 3ER 1BB 1K

At the Plate:

Phils were up 4-2 heading into the Bottom of the 9th with Lidge coming into the game. A-Rod tied the game with a 2-run bomb and Cabrera later hit the game-winning single with a man on second. F’n Lidge.

May 24th: Phils 4 Yanks 3 (11) W: Condrey L: Tomko

On the Mound:

Hamels, 6IP 8H 2ER 0BB 5K

Sabathia, 8IP 9H 3ER 0BB 4K

At the Plate:

J-Roll, Victorino, Ibanez and Chooch all knocked in runs in this game. Teixeira homered off Hamels in the 6th for the Yankees. Chooch had the game-winning double to score Utley in the Top of the 11th, and Condrey threw a perfect bottom half of the inning for the win. F Sabathia.

2-1 for the series with the only loss coming at the hands of a Brad Lidge blown save – not too shabby. Of course, the Phils have a new ace up their sleeve they didn’t have back in May…maybe you’ve heard of him. This will mean nothing to the talking heads at ESPN, SI, etc., however, who will ALL pick the Yankees to win this series. Who gives a shit, though? They all picked the Rockies and Dodgers to win the previous series’, and we all know how that worked out. I am so f’n pumped for this series; Wednesday can’t get here fast enough! GO PHILS!!!

DWDW Pro: Week 7 Edition

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this blog where the three contributors embarrass themselves picking the college and pro games of the week. Here are our picks for Sunday's games.

Doc's Picks:

Atlanta (4-1) at Dallas (3-2) Line: Dal -4.5 O/U: 47

I don't feel like Dallas should be favored in this matchup, let alone by 4 points. This is a case of Vegas taking advantage of the so called America's Team. This should be a close game. I like Atlanta outright but take the points just in case Vegas knows something that I don't.

Pick: Falcons taking the points

Chicago (3-2) at Cincinnati (4-2) Line: Pick'em O/U: 42

Cinci is going to come back to earth at some point. Why not now? Both teams are a little overrated in my eyes but I'll take Chicago to take the game.

Pick: Bears

Namesake's Picks:

Indianapolis (5-0) at St. Louis (0-6) Line: Colts - 14 O/U: 45

Pick: Indy

San Francisco (3-2) at Houston (3-3) Line: SF -3 O/U: 44.5

Pick: Houston

Richards knocks out Booth

The Flyers beat the Panthers 4-1 last night behind Danny Briere's 2 goals but the game will be remembered and talked about due to this hit. David Booth brought the puck into the Flyers zone. Mike Richards had him lined up and when Booth looked back to make a drop pass, Richards leveled him. Richards was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct.

DWDW College Style

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this blog where the three contributors embarrass themselves picking the college and pro games of the week. Here are our picks for Saturday's games.

Namesake’s Picks:

Boston College(5-2) @ Notre Dame(4-2) Line: ND (-7.5) O/U: 55.5

Boston College has won the last 6 meetings between these two schools, but I have a feeling the Irish are going to avenge themselves this year. Jimmy Clausen has been playing like a future pro, and coming off a tough loss last week I expect him to come out firing. I’m taking the Irish.

Pick: ND giving the points

No.8 Iowa(7-0) @ Michigan State(4-3) Line: MSU (-1) O/U: 42

I think Iowa’s luck runs out this weekend. Their bid for a BCS bowl goes out the window with a loss to Michigan State, and I’m all for it. MSU is no powerhouse, but I think they get it done at home. Screw Iowa.

Pick: Spartans

Doc's Picks:

No. 1 Florida (6-0) at Mississippi State (3-4) Line: Miss St +23 O/U: 50

Florida has not been as dominant this year, in part because they lost Offensive coordinator Dan Mullen to Miss St. Mullen was coordinator on 2 Nat'l Championship Gator teams and coached Tebow to the Heisman.

Pick: Bulldogs covers

Connecticut (4-2) at No. 22 West Virginia (5-1) Line: WV -7.5 O/U: 46.5

UCONN's first game since corner, Jasper Howard was tragically killed last week. Connecticut will have the emotional edge not to mention I think they are the better team.

Pick: UCONN taking the points

No.8 Iowa(7-0) @ Michigan State(4-3) Line: MSU (-1) O/U: 42

I do not understand the love Vegas is giving Michigan State.

Pick: Iowa

NL CHAMPS

Once again the Phils did not disappoint last night. Capturing their second consecutive pennant in style, this team is clearly the class of the NL. Now the Yankees are up 3-1 so I would assume that is who we will play come Wednesday, so brace yourself Phillies fans. Just like last series we will have to hear all the bull shit about the Yankees and how the Phils don't stand a chance. Joe Buck and Tim McCarver will be blowing Jeter and A-Rod the whole series. I will have to hear that fat shit Arty Lange talk about his "beloved" Yankees on Howard Stern every morning.(heroin addict) This is something that all of us are going to have deal with throughout the next two weeks. I am just warning everyone out there. ESPN will be all over the Yankees, but the good news is that we will won't have to hear Steve Phillips because he will be out cheating on his wife. Kate Hudson and her gay boyfriend will be talked about more than what Cliff Lee has done throughout the playoffs. Everywhere will be all about the Yankees and how good they are, not the fact that the Phils just ran through the National League like they were playing a bunch of American Legion teams. This is all fine with me because this team will finally get the opportunity to prove themselves on a national stage, and get the respect that they deserve when they hand it to the Yankees.

I am not saying that the Yankees are a bad team, and I am really looking forward to playing them. I think this will be a great series, provided the Yankees close out the series with the Angels. As a Phillies fan I think that I would rather play the Yankees over the Angels. The Phils match up better with the Yankees, and the Angels have beat us pretty good over the recent years. I am just hoping that the Angels make things interesting. Maybe win tonight and force them to go back to New York for a game 6. By the Phils winning last night that will give them a full week of rest which is well deserved. This will give them the opportunity to get refreshed and ready to come out and kick the Yankees asses. F the Yankees and everything they are about. Let's Go Phils!

Tonight

Well here we are again for the second consecutive year, the Phils are one game away from winning the pennant and sending the Dodgers packing...AGAIN. Sorry Bud Selig, TBS, and FOX you will not be getting your wish again this year. The Yankees will most likely be playing the Phillies this year, and there will not be any reunion of Joe Torre going back to New York to take on his former team. It doesn't look good for Joe Torre and the Dodgers as they are on the verge of losing their second consecutive NLCS to yours truly.

Tonight it will be the former NLCS MVP Hamels taking on the former drunk of the Phils rotation, Padilla. Padilla pitched pretty well in game 2, but I cannot believe Torre is starting him in Philadelphia tonight. The way I see it is he couldn't handle the pressure while he pitched here, so what makes anyone (including his former head coach, Larry Bowa) think that he will be able to handle it tonight in a huge game, in his old ball park with the most intimidating fans in baseball. City workers have the signs, street lights, poles, bus stations, and even trees all greased up, now all we need is Hamels to be Hamels tonight. GO PHILS!

Nova Picked as Big East Favorite

Villanova is picked to win the Big East Conference, receiving 10 first place votes in the coaches poll. West Viginia, received 5 first place votes and are picked 2nd with UCONN third.

Notre Dame's Luke Harangody was named preseason player of the year for the second straight year, joining Patrick Ewing as the only players to ever be picked more than once.

Joining him on the six-man preseason first team were seniors Deonta Vaughn of Cincinnati, Lazar Hayward of Marquette, Scottie Reynolds of Villanova and Da'Sean Butler of West Virginia, and sophomore Greg Monroe of Georgetown.

The Big East is confused and does not understand that only five players play at once.

Villanova will once again have a top flight back court with Scottie Reynolds, Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes. Reggie Redding has been suspended for the Fall Semester for his inability to stay away from the marajuana. Incoming freshmen Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns are both McDonald’s All-Americans and will fight for playing time. Nova is coming off of a 30 win season and a final 4 berth.

Happ Named Sporting News' ROY

J.A. Happ was named the Sporting News Rookie of the Year this afternoon. The Phillies’ left-hander went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 35 games (23 starts) this season, striking out 119 batters in 166 innings pitched.  Happ had a hell of a year for the Fightins and is a major reason they are where they are right now.  He’s come up big all season and absolutely deserves the award.

White Sox 3B Gordon Beckam won the award for the AL.  Beckham hit .270 with 28 doubles, 14 homers and 63 RBIs in 103 games for the Sox

What A Game

Of all the games that I have been to over the years I think that this one has to rank second, only to game 5 of the World Series last year. Jimmy Rollins is the man! This team never disappoints. They come out and play hard until the final out of every single game. Like Charlie said last night in his press conference, "We play all 27 outs". This is the perfect Philadelphia team, this is the team that this city has been waiting for. We all know that Philly fans have a bad rep, but I think that the majority can agree that all we want are teams that will play hard until the final out is made, or the final second ticks off the clock. Pat Gillick and Ruben Amaro have built a machine that does exactly that. Night in and night out someone different steps up in a key situation. If not Lee, then Howard. If not Howard, then Jimmy. The list goes right down the lineup and the rotation, its really unbelievable how resilient this team is.

Throughout a season, whether its football, hockey, basketball, or baseball, teams establish an identity that sticks with them for a long time. With the exception of a few players this Phillies team has the same major pieces as they did last year. The identity that this team has created for themselves is something that not only Phillies fans will never forget, but also anyone else who has watched how this team plays. It has to be intimidating to other teams when they look over to the Phils dugout and see beasts like Howard, Utley, and Werth. There is not one easy out in that entire lineup, and any Phillies pitcher has the ability to go out there and shut down an opposing offense. Now is a great time to be a Phils fan, so take in every pitch and ride this all the way to a repeat. LET'S GO PHILS

Eagles @ Oakland Live Blog

Let's be honest, this game will probably suck. Donovan should be on the bench in the second half and Vick/Kolb will be in for mop up duty. Leave your comments here to better pass the time until the Phils game. Go Birds!

Question: Is this the most boring Eagles season of all-time? The Birds have looked good, but the competition has been pathetic - no excitement whatsoever. I can't wait for the Giants game in 2 weeks.

DWDW Pro: Week 6 Edition

Dirty Wudders Degenerate Wagering is a feature of this blog where the three contributors embarrass themselves picking the college and pro games of the week. Here are our picks for Sunday's games.

Namesake's Picks:
Eagles @ Oakland Line: PHI (-14)
Another preseason game for the Birds this week. So far I am thoroughly bored with this season. Only two more games until the Giants. Birds win this one in a blowout.
Pick: Birds giving the 14

Baltimore @ Brett Favre Line: Minny (-3)
Baltimore has been struggling lately and needs to win this game. I just don't see it happening this week on the road in Minny.
Pick: Vikings
Carolina @ Tampa Bay Line: Carolina (-3)
Tampa sucks. Carolina sucks. I have a feeling Carolina sucks a little less, though.
Pick: Carolina

Doc's Picks:
Houston @ Cincinnati Line: Cincy (-4)
Pick: Houston getting the points

Kansas City @ Washington Line: Wash (-6)
Pick: KC getting the points

Chicago @ Atlanta Line: ATL (-3.5)
Pick: Atlanta giving the points

Namesake, 4-4
DW, 4-4
doc, 4-6
Sec202, 2-3
