Leodis McKelvin Shines in Pats Win

Hell of a game last night.  Not the game we were expecting, but a great way to kickoff Monday Night Football for 2009. I think most people, Dirty Wudders included, thought the Pats would dominate from the start, but Buffalo played a great game and actually should have picked up the win in this one.

The Bills were up 11 with 5:32 remaining in the 4th quarter when Tom Brady drove the Pats 81 yards, capping it off with a TD pass to Ben Watson with 2:06 left in the game.  New England then decided to kickoff rather than go for the onside kick, and it paid off - big time.  Dipshit Bills RB Leodis McKelvin caught the kickoff while backpedaling near the goaline – bad move – then, instead of securing the ball and going down when he was hounded by Patriots, decides to fight for another meaningless yard or two – really bad move.  This, obviously, led to a forced fumble and the Pats regaining control on the Bills 30 yard line.  Brady then put New England up for good with a TD pass to Ben Watson with :50 on the clock, leaving enough time for Buffalo to drive down the field and score - just not last night.  Final Score: Pats 25 Bills 24.

Everything I’ve seen or read so far this morning has been slurping Brady, as expected, but I’m not so sure he deseverves ALL the credit.  Yes, he drove his team 81 yards to make it a one-score game – all Brady, I will give him that.  But if McKelvin lets the ensuing kickoff sail through the endzone, or just goes down after initial contact, the Pats don’t win that game.  Ok, maybe they do, but the odds are signifcantly against them.  I’m not saying Brady wasn’t the main factor in the Patriots being able to score twice, I’m just saying I don’t agree with this kind of hyperbole, courtesy of Peter King:

“Brady could play 20 years in the NFL, and this game will go down as one of the five most memorable, Super Bowls included.” I disagree.  I know he’s coming off of knee surgery and blah blah blah, but Leodis McKelvin deserves the game ball, he was the real hero in New England last night.

Hell of a game, though. Thank God football is back.

  1. I'm so glad I'm not a Bills fan. McKelvin's retarded decision reminded of J.R. Reed diving to catch a punt. What an idiot.

  2. how about some credit for Dick Jauron and/or the special teams coach? if you leave a rookie to go out there and make that decision, on that night, you get what you deserve. it's on one of the coaches.

  3. If McKelvin is the kick returner, no coach is going to take him out in that situation. If you can't trust him then he shouldn't be back there in the first place. I agree that he should have been "coached up" to know that ball security is more importatnt than yards in that situation.

Could there have been a whistle? It seemed like he was held up a little bit when the ball came out.
