DeRosa

With recent wrist problems that led to off season surgery for Mark DeRosa, Elias Rankings now has him listed as a type-B free agent. This is big for not only him, but teams that are looking for a Free Agent third basemen. Now that he is a type B free agent which ever team signs him will not have to give up a first round draft pick. Would he be a good fit for the Phils? The South Jersey native, and former University of Penn quarterback would bring even more power to an already scary lineup. He plays good defense and the Phils could get him for pretty cheap. Oh yea and he can almost any position. He is a great utility guy that can be used basically anywhere which is big when you are playing in the World Series with a DH.

There are a lot of free agent third basemen out there, but this would make a lot of sense for Philly. DeRosa strikes out a lot, but he is a potential 30 home runs and 100 RBI guy. He is another right handed bat that plays solid defense, and has proven to be a National League player.

I know that the season hasn't even been over for a week, but I am already pumped. The GM's are in Chicago talking with other teams about players, and there are only 95days left until Pitchers and Catchers report.

  1. I can't take credit for this idea and it may not make any sense for us, but hear me out.

Phils give up Happ, Domonic Brown, Ben Francisco (or someone else) to the Nationals for Ryan Zimmerman.

The Nationals have a lot invested in their future and must realize they need a wealth of young talent for the future more than a star right now. The Nats must realize that in the short term they are not going to compete with the Phillies so with Strasburg and the SI Cover Boy catcher that they'll probably get in the draft next year, they should be planning for a run in about 2-3 years.

Does that make sense at all? Is it too much to give up for Zimmerman? This could move Victo to the 7 hole with a lineup of:

    Rollins-Utley-Zimmerman-Howard-Ibanez-Werth-Victorino-Ruiz-P

Zimmerman signed a 5yr - $43 Mil contract last year meaning he'll get paid:

    2010: $6.25 million
    2011: $8.925 million
    2012: $12 million
    2013: $14 million

Please blow this idea out of the water and tell me why it can't happen because if you don't I'm going to start pushing it and getting excited about it.

  2. It makes some sense for the Phillies if they could replace Happ with a decent free agent. Depends on how other teams view Happ. Figure that the rotation is now:

Lee/Hamels/Blanton/Happ/_____ With Moyer, maybe Pedro, maybe Kendrick maybe someone else fighting for the 5th spot.

With Drabek maybe looking at a midseason call-up.

Wow-would that be a killer lineup or what? Though I would still probably go with Rollins-Victo-Utley-Howard-Zimmerman-Werth-Ibanez-Ruiz. Maybe switching Howard and Zimmerman against lefties, and Werth/Ibanez against righties.

Bottom Line: Great idea but I do not see it happening. Washington fans(?) would be all them if they traded their 1 true star - even if it would help them in the long run.

  3. I like your style Spider, but we are talking two teams in the same division that would send us there superstar. They would probably want more than that. Divisional foes are always hesitant to make trades with each other. Also, he is the only reason that fans even go to Nationals games. Zimmerman is a stud, and I am still not sure why he signed a 5 year deal with them since they are about 6-8 years away from even being considered a playoff hopeful.

If the Nats were willing to accept Spider's proposal, I would do it in a heartbeat.

  4. Agreed - I think you would have to throw in another pretty good prospect instead of an extra guy like Ben.
