So What Do We Think?

Still not finalized but it looks like the Phils are going to be giving up prized prospects Michael Taylor, Kyle Drabek and Travis d’Arnaud in return for prospect pitchers Phillipe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez and outfielder Tyson Gillies.

Am I forgetting anybody? Ahh yes, the Phils get Roy Halladay and lose postseason hero Cliff Lee.

What could have been without Moyer's ill advised 2nd year?

Short term, I don't think the Phils are much better if at all for 2010. This deal was made for the security of having Halladay for multiple years- which is huge. Halladay is widely regarded as the best pitcher in baseball. Lookinng forward to some Halladay vs Santana matchups this summer. The Phillies have to hope Halladay stays healthy and Hamels can learn from his work ethic.

I can't say I know much about the Aumont, Ramirez and Gillies except from what I am reading - they seem pretty good yet raw. Taylor hits the snot out of the ball but he would have been stuck at AAA this year with an even bigger prospect (Brown)on his heels. It is tough giving up Drabek but hopefully Aumont and/or Ramirez can offset losing him. Gillies seems to be a few years away but could replace one of the outfielders eventually.

This is a tough deal to grade right away. Yes I would have loved to have Lee and Halladay but the wallets say that could not have happened. I say suck it up, eat the 9 million and then collect the two 1st rounders next year...Oh well. I am cautiously optimistic. I hate to lose Clifton but it didn't seem like he was going to resign. I hate to lose the prospects but it seems like the Phils got some in return.

I look forward to seeing Roy in Phils Red and another long postseason run.

Been quiet around here. What do you guys think?

  1. Let's say hypothetically that Halladay gets 3 more wins than Lee this year. Will that make a difference? I don't think that Halladay is head and shoulders above Lee over the past two season. Who made the decision that Drabak was touchable over the last four months?

I'm out of town so you guys are closer to this than I am, but it's not adding up to me.

I think it's going to be fun having a guy like Halladay, but losing Lee and a bunch of prospects just isn't adding up to me long-term.

  2. Do you think it's odd that they haven't announced the players involved? Is there any way that we keep Lee? I think that the reason this is taking so long is because Amaro is trying to convince Phillies ownership that they'll make that extra $9M in a week if they keep both Halladay and Lee.

    Just a conspiracy theory.

  3. I like Lee and all, but Spider the Phils have Halladay for at least the next 4 years, with 2 years of options. Lee will be gone after this year. He is going to command a lot more than a 3 year $56 million contract after the season. It may not make the Phils that much better now, but looking ahead it is a great move.

To me this doesn't look like a three team trade anymore. I mean the Phils are getting Halladay and $6 million, and the Blue Jays are getting Taylor, D'Arnaud, and Drabek. I am interested to see if the Phils are going to shop Lee elsewhere to get better talent. The Mariners have absolutley nothing to do with Halladay going to Philly. If I were the Phils I would look elsewhere before they trade Lee to the Mariners.

  4. Last I heard Taylor was headed to Oakland thru Seattle. Brett Wallace goes to Seattle. He's the guy Oakland got for Matt Holiday.

I agree that short term its not a big upgrade. They are trading a 1yr ace for a multiple year ace.

Though I would say the prospects the Phils gave up are better than the ones they got - stark wrote - in the linked article above that scouts are mixed on that. Some like Drabek less than others.

  5. I thought that Taylor was going to Oakland from Toronto? Toronto will recieve Brett Wallace and will be Toronto's third basemen of the future.

Why not hang on to Lee until the trade deadline and then shop him. This would or should give the Phils a nice comfortable lead in the NL East, and then on July 31st they will have a better idea on what they need i.e. closer/bullpen/injuries, to make another run at a World Championship. They would still be dumping his salary, just not until July.

  6. Yeah - all I know is that he is ending up in Oakland. I think it is from Toronto.

A team in the pennant race is not going to shop Cliff Lee at the trade deadline. The Lee trade was made because of the self imposed salary cap of 140 million or whatever.
