Don't Act So Surprised

Tiger, Tiger, Tiger, what are we going to do with you? You cheater! You liar! How can we ever forgive you? A professional athlete cheating on his spouse is something this country will not stand for! Drug use, rape, domestic abuse and even murder are all acceptable crimes, but adultery! That’s a nish nish, my friend, and now you’re in the sights of the tabloids – not a good place to be. Piss off UsWeekly and piss off the masses, apparently. The coverage of this thing has been extraordinary, you’d think he raped (Kobe), beat (the list is too long), or murdered (OJ, Caruth)…give me a f*cking break. Get off your high horse, America, you’ll forgive and forget in no time.

Are we really so naïve in this country to believe our cherished and beloved professional athletes don’t have moments of weakness? So easily we forget Kobe, Ewing, Mutumbo, the Vikings Sex Boat, etc…this sh*t happens! Men are weak! And we’re not talking about moments of weakness a normal man would experience, we’re talking about model-caliber women (in most cases) throwing their hotness in the faces of these guys when they’re vulnerable…drunk… away from home. There’s a name for these people, they’re called Star-F*ckers, and they’re widespread in places like Vegas, LA and New York - they’re pariahs and they’re awful human beings, but they exist. To be clear, I am not attempting to condone Tiger’s behavior by any means, I’m merely saying don’t act so surprised. This.Sh*t.Happens. In celebrity/athlete circles, this happens every day. Tiger is human, he’s a man, and he’s got an ego the size of Doc’s head, do you really expect him to control himself in a situation such as this?

Honestly, I think finding out he didn’t cheat on his wife would be more shocking.  He is, arguably, the most famous athlete in the world, worth millions and is fairly young. The temptation he is put through on a daily basis is more than anyone reading this blog will ever know (especially this blog), and if anything I feel this proves Tiger is human. I wouldn’t worry about it if I was him, a major tourney victory or two and all is forgotten.  He’ll be sexing with Mutumbo in no time.

Bottom line: Don’t act so surprised, America. It’s not the first time one of our golden boys has taken a fall, and it won’t be the last. He’ll get back up, redeem himself, and we’ll love him again – you know we will.

This, on the other hand, I find disturbing. It’s an email allegedly send to Rachel Uchitel from Tiger’s email:

“I had a dream we were married and I was leading the tournament,” he allegedly wrote. “I came home, excited to see you, and there you were in the bedroom getting f - - -ed by Derek and David. Some part of me thinks you would like that. But now I can’t get back to sleep. My body is tired, but mind awake. Need an Ambien.”

What the f*ck is that all about? Dreaming about Derek Jeter is understandable; just ask Sec202, but David Boreanz? Seriously? Angel from the WB? 6ABC’s own Dave Roberts’ son (tell me I’m not the only one who knows that)? I could see dreaming about Dave Roberts, but Bones? And who dreams about being married anyway? If anything, I’m dreaming the exact opposite!  What a weirdo!

No.9 Michigan St 82 No.10 UNC 89: Sophomore Ed Davis scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting for the Tar Heels (7-1), while Larry Drew II had 18 points and hit five free throws in the final minute to help the UNC hold off a late run by the Spartans (5-2). North Carolina, which shot 58 percent, led by as many as 19 points early in the second half to beat Michigan State for the second straight year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Suns 99 Knicks 126: Danilo Gallinari had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the Knicks stunned the Suns 126-99 on Tuesday night, snapping a five-game losing streak and giving coach Mike D’Antoni a solid win against his old team.  This was the first game of the season in which the Suns failed to score at least 100 points. 

Allen Iverson: Much to RH’s chagrin, The Inquirer is reporting that A.I. will officially become a member of the Sixers this morning, signing a one-year deal for the veteran minimum and bringing The Answer back to Philly for the second go around.  Old Newport News homies Iverson and Michael Vick back in the same area code – this could get ugly.

Phillies All-Decade Team

As the decade winds down, DirtyWudders takes a look back on the most successful decade in Phillies history. We put together a 25 man roster with players who had the best season of the decade at the position. Disagree with the choices? Well, that’s what the comment section is for.

Manager: Charlie Manual ‘08

Batting Order:

1. SS. Jimmy Rollins ’07 (.296, 30 HR, 20 2B, 139 R, MVP, Gold Glove) – Jimmy did some talking in the preseason with his “Team to Beat” statement and all he did was win the NL MVP backing it up. Rollins became the first player in history to collect at least 200 hits, 30 homers, 20 triples and 25 steals in a season.


2. CF. Aaron Rowand ’07 (.309, 27 HR, 89 RBI, 107 R, Gold Glove) – He had only a short stint in Philadelphia but played a big part in changing the culture of the team. Most notably he decided to run through a wall instead of backing off to avoid the contact (Abreu/Lofton). Rowand had a great 2007 season, mostly hitting behind the heart of the order and also played a fantastic Center Field. The rest of the team after the jump.


3. 2B. Chase Utley ’06 (.309, 32 HR, 102 RBI, 131 R) – A model of consistency, DW could have picked any of the last 5 years as his best but we picked ’06 because of his career high's of 203 hits and 131 runs scored. No question, Chase Utley is the best second baseman in the game.


4. 1B. Ryan Howard ’06 (.313, 58 HR, 149 RBI, MVP) – You will be hard pressed to find anyone (clean) in the history of the game to put up numbers like these in a season. Ryan will have trouble hitting .313 again due to the shift teams use against him but he continues to drive runners in and is the premier power hitter in baseball.


5. 3B. Scott Rolen ’01 (.289, 25 HR, 107 RBI, Gold Glove) – Rolen was a star on the down teams of the decade. He really wasn’t cut out as a Philly guy. Played a great third base and always put up solid numbers. Claimed St. Louis was baseball heaven upon arrival and then baseball heaven got sick of him. Malcontent.


6. RF. Bobby Abreu ’01 (.289, 31 HR, 110 RBI, 118 R, 36 SB) – Pure numbers guy. His contract was traded to the Yankees in exchange for next to nothing and the Phillies immediately took off – finishing strong in ’06, before 3 straight playoff seasons. He was a guy who frustrated almost everyone during the season and then afterwards everyone wondered where those numbers came from.


7. LF. Pat Burrell ’02 (.282, 37 HR, 116 RBI, 96 R) – DW thought that this season was the beginning of something special. Although he had some great moments in Philadelphia – topped off by his lone ’08 World Series hit which came in Game 5 part two – Pat was a bit of a disappointment when considering the potential that he had. He always produced some solid power numbers and OBP.

8. C. Mike Lieberthal ’03 (.313, 13 HR, 81 RBI, 30 2B) – Although Lieby was an All-Star in ’00, he was more productive in ’03. Yeah, he was a rally killer towards the end of his career in Philly but the 2 time all star enjoyed a solid career in philadelphia.

Rotation:

1. Cole Hamels ’08 (14-10, 3.09, 227.1 IP, 196 K, 2 SHO) – Cole had an underrated regular season in ’08. He really should have won more games with the numbers that he put up. Of course no one will forget the way de dominated in the postseason.

2. Brett Myers ’05 (13-8, 3.72, 215.1 IP, 208 K, 2 CG) – Brett’s best season as a starter was his only that he reached 200 innings. It looked like he was on the verge of stardom.

3. Jamie Moyer ’08 (16-7, 3.71, 196.1 IP – 16 wins from a guy who was not expected to do much.

4. Randy Wolf ’02 (11-9, 3.20, 210.2, 172 K, 3 CG, 2SO) – Good numbers but couldn’t cash in on wins because of the mediocre team around him.

5. Vicente Padilla ’02 (14-11, 3.28, 206 IP, 1 CG SHO) – Another wasted solid season on the mediocre 80 win team. Drunk made the all-star team in ’02

Bullpen:

Swingman: J.A. Happ ’09 (12-4, 2.93, 166 IP, 119 K, 3 CG, 2 SHO) – Phenomenal rookie year deserves to be in the all-Decade rotation but Charlie was afraid Padilla would quit on the team if he was removed. Happ has pitched well in every role he has been put in. One wonders if he could have been used better in the '09 postseason.

Middle Reliever: Ryan Madsen ’08 (3.05) – Developed into a top notch setup guy in the second half of ’08. His fastball came out of nowhere.

Middle Reliever: Rheal Cormier ’03 (8-0, 1.70) – Consistently inconsistent, Cormier had a very good ’03 campaign, sandwiched by a bunch of bad ones. ’07 Romero has an argument but he did not play the full season in Philadelphia.(DW expects some push back on this selection - Namesake always hated the Rheal Dheal)

Setup: (RH): Jose Mesa ’01 (2.34, 42 saves) – Joe Table is the all-time leader in saves for the Phillies (and I believe Indians) although he is often a punch line.

Setup: (LH): Billy Wagner ’05 (1.51, 38 saves): Little guy threw gas. He never really understood Philadelphia and in turn really fit Queens NY. Good pitcher but came up small in big games (like I said perfect fit in perfectly in Queens). Biggio’s homerun still scars me.

Closer: Brad Lidge ’08 (1.95, 41 saves): The glue that held the ’08 team together. Perfect Season. We will not bring up his ’09 campaign and hope to soon forget it.

Bench:

Pinch Hitter: Greg Dobbs ’08 (.301, 9HR) – One of the best pinch hitting seasons in memory. He was a weapon the '09 team lacked.

1B: Jim Thome ’03 (.266, 47 HR, 131 RBI) – The Horse was clutch. Single-handedly carried some of the Bowa teams to the verge of the playoffs. Could not get over the hump.

Utility: Placido Polanco ’04 (.298, 17 HR, 74 R) – Kept the seat warm for Utley to take over. DW still wonders why David Bell got the nod over him at 3rd. Traded to Detroit for Ugie!

Corner OF: Jayson Werth ’09 (..268, 36 HR, 99 RBI, 98 R) – Arguably the MVP of the ’09 Phillies. Was a bit of a question mark going in but really solidified himself as good player.

OF: Shane Victorino ’09 (.292, 102 R, 39 2B) – The current Phillies sparkplug does a little bit of everything.

Good Riddance

It will be a glorious day for baseball on December 31, 2012. That is the date that Bud Selig will step down, according to the Chicago Tribune. Selig, 75 years old, could be the commish for 20 years if he finishes out his entire contract. There has been a lot of talk about this Jack Ass on DW in the past. I think that we can all agree that it will be good to see him go. Good riddance Bud. The George Bush of baseball will finally be gone. Maybe, like his counterpart (George W), he will turn to inspirational speaking. Instead of talking politics, he can teach kids how to properly inject steroids into their ass, or give them some names of dealers. Read below for the top ten list:

Bud's Top Ten Accomplishments during his term as Commissioner:

1. He introduced Steroids to Baseball

2. He screwed up the 2008 World Series, and when he was asked, he didn't event know the rules. Umm you are the commissioner dick head. Then he pushed back the season a full week the next year. (Did you not think that there would be a chance that the series would be on the East Coast? By pushing back the season only means that the weather could be worse you asshole)

3. He made a deal with TBS to do the playoff games.

4. He has kept Pete Rose out of the Hall of Fame.

5. He allowed Barry Bonds and Rafael Palmeiro to commit perjury.

6. The Mitchell Report. (what did that do?)

7. The 1994 strike that almost ruined baseball.

8. Interleague play. (Good for the revenue aspect, terrible for the teams)

9. It took Barry Bonds' head to triple in size to implement a random drug testing program for baseball.

Phils to Sign Local Catcher

Does this mean the end of the Paul Bako era? The MorningCall is reporting that Brian Schneider passed a physical and will sign to be Carlos Ruiz backup next season. Schneider is one of the game's better defensive catchers and is a career .251 hitter.

Schneider recived interest from other teams but wanted to play for his hometown team as well as a contender. I think its a solid signing by Amaro.

Celek signs 6 year extension

The Eagles have announced that they have locked up Brent Celek thru 2016, 1 week after looking up Winston Justice with a 4 yr deal. (philly.com)

Good signing for the birds as Celek has really stepped up this year. Hopefully those drops from last week don't continue. Celek has 54 receptions for 601 yards and 5 TD's so far this season.

Halladay Playing Hard Ball

Roy Halladay has told the Blue Jays he will exercise his no-trade clause during the 2010 season, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.  Olney reported this morning on Mike & Mike that if Toronto does not trade him this offseason, then he’s not going anywhere until he hits the free agent market.  He will not accept any trade offers throughout the 2010 season.  J.P. Ricciardi has really backed himself into a corner here, he either has to trade him and get something, or watch him sign with another team following next season and get squat.  Olney did mention Philly as a possible landing spot…commence rumor mongering.

Dallas 104 76ers 102: The Sixers fought back from an 11 point 4th quarter deficit but lost on a Jason Terry's 17 foot jumper with 1.4 remaining. Willie Green led the sixers with 23 points. Elton Brand reached what we expecting him to average in Philly: 21 and 10. Dalembert took advantage of the lack of a big man on Dallas to record 19 rebounds. This was the 7th straight loss for the sixers who are only 4.5 games ahead of the winless Nets and still in the thick of the playoff race.

Saints 38 Pats 17: Did not expect this one. Drew Brees could not be stopped last night and completely outshined the Patriots high powered attack. Tom Brady looked completely rattled in the Superdome and ESPN's Steve Young suggested that the Patriots quit in the 4th Quarter. The 'aints are 11-0!

Rider 81 St. Joe 73: Long year on Hawk Hill. Rider now trails the series 17-3 and won its first in the series since 1980.

Penn State 69 Virginia 66: Stifiled in the first half, Taylor Battle scored 28 of his 32 in second half leading the Nits over the Cavs in the opener of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Lions improve to 5-2. DW will be in attendance as they take on the Temple Owls this weekend in North Philly.
