Pitching Rant

Late morning pitching rant from friend of DirtyWudders, The Don.... I think the Lee acquisition certainly makes the Phil’s starting rotation the best in the NL and on par with Boston and the Yanks (assuming neither lands Halladay). The number one question now is what to do about the back of the bullpen? Lidge, right now is terrible, Madson has been erratic, and Condrey, Durbin and Romero are on the DL. Should Lidge stay the closer? What about Myers if he comes back healthy or Pedro with his four pitch repertoire? He might be able to let it all hang out if he only had to go one inning. Too many starters (Hamels, Lee, Happ, Moyer, Pedro, Lopez) and a bullpen that needs to be settled soon. Coming up with the right pitchers to fill the right roles will be Manuel’s hardest decision as we head toward the playoffs.

  1. Agreed that the back end of the bullpen is what most likely will win it or lose it for the Phils.

I doubt Myers will be healthy enough to prove he can close. Pedro is an interesting thought (MLB Network would love it, joining the 'PEN) but I think Chalie is going to stick with Lidge.

Lidge had one of the best seasons ever by a closer last year. Is it possible that he could have the worst ever this year, for a closer who does not lose his job? 0-4, 7.11 ERA on a team that is 17 games above .500. Many of his 20 saves are due to the fact that he came in with greater than a 1 run lead.

  2. There is no way that the Phils will put Myers in as a closer. Lidge is the closer of the Phils. Myers, if he comes back, will be a 6th or 7th inning guy.

As for having too many starters. I mean that is not a bad thing at all. There are not that many teams in baseball that have that problem. I dont think that the Phils are done yet with the trading. I thought that the Phils may have gone after Sherril, but he is now a Dodger. Chad Qualls is still out there I hope that thet add another arm in the pen before tomorrow.

If the Phils are done I would like to see Happ move back to the bull pen and insert Pedro as the 5th starter. This will take a lefty out of our rotation, and you have a guy in Happ who has experience out of the pen. I think that Pedro can make a huge contribution to our staff if he stays healthy. The key is if he stays healthy.
