Pedro Deal Done?

Per Daily News Live and Todd Zolecki's Twitter account, it is being reported that the Phillies and Pedro Martinez have come to terms on a 1-year deal worth $4 million. I guess Doc Halladay is out the window. I think I made my feelings clear about Pedro the other day - Boo!

  1. Ugh. The Jays probably wanted too much for Halladay. Either that, or the Phils are still in the running for Halladay and still thought they needed a pitcher.

  2. I hope Ruben didn't settle for this. We'll see, im not happy about it either

  3. Pedro is here to make Happ expendable so we can trade for Halladay. On August 1st, our rotation will be:

    1 - Halladay
    2 - Hamels
    3 - Blanton
    4 - Moyer
    5 - Martinez

  4. 4 million has to be inaccurate. He wanted 5 to start the year, which was crazy, no way he should get 4 now unless it is incentive based..

  5. I'm finally getting a reply in on this son of a bitch. I can't comment at work and rarely get on my comp at home - but I've been following you pussies and figured I'd give my two cents on this.

I'm perfectly fine with this pick-up. I forget where I heard it, but a scout or someone was saying Pedro hasn't looked this good in over 3 years. He's still Pedro for christ's sake - and I'll take him over Bastardo or whatever else we throw out there. I'm so sick of hearing Carrasco's name on 950, can we just trade his ass for a scrub and get it over with?

In regards to this whole Halladay nonsense, I'm completely against giving up 3-4 young studs to get him for a year-and-a-half. I really think we have the chance to be nasty for another 5-10 years (easily 5). Did any of you read Conlin's article on Michael Taylor the other day? If you did, you probably want us to hang on to him. How old is this guy though? Figure we have our current outfield signed for at least another 2 years, so why not trade Werth (or Victorino) and Happ, plus a Jason Donald or Lou Marson in there? I'd give them both, screw it.

Happ could very well be this year's Kyle Kendrick, and I'm sick of hearing about Donald - he can't crack the line-up. Marson seems like we could use him in another year, but I'm pretty sure we've got a guy in Double A too, maybe Single - and for the time being we can deal with Ruiz and whoever.

Well, that's my point. Don't give up Taylor, Drabeck, Knapp, or Brown for Halladay, but naturally I'm all about getting him if we still can otherwise.

I went to the game last night, had 2nd row seats along 3rd base (134) - sickest game I've ever been to, by far

  6. It looks like the Pedro deal is a prorated $4mil so it should come out to be a little less than $2 mil.

  7. I'm warming up to the Pedro deal a little bit, if he is coming in to be a 5th starter. I still find it a bit odd that the Phillies are the only ones looking at him. I am not expecting alot out of him...

I agree, I do not want to give up Drabek or Taylor - I also don't think Toronto listens if they don't get Drabek. I really want the Phils to trade Mayberry so Taylor can at least move up the ladder.

Marson, Donald and Carrasco are all expendable.

I would deal Brown. He is their #1 postional prospect but the little that I know about him seems like he is a project. It seems like Knapp is nasty.

Happ's stock is probably at the highest it ever was, right now. Toronto also knows firsthand because she shut their ass's out a few weeks back. I like Happ way better than I ever liked Kendrick but I would deal him in a second for a front line starter like Halladay.

It appears the Phillies are poised to sign Pedro Martinez.

According to a source and a published report, Martinez’s signing with the Phillies is contingent upon him passing a physical, which he will take Monday or Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Twice last week the Phillies watched Martinez throw at their baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. The 37-year-old Martinez has not pitched in the majors this season; he went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA for the Mets last season. He also pitched in March for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. A report surfaced from the Dominican last week that Martinez and the Phillies had agreed to a $4 million deal.

After going 15-8 with a 2.82 ERA in 2005, Martinez, a three-time Cy Young award winner, went 17-15 with a 4.74 ERA in 48 starts in three combined seasons. When his contract ended after the Mets choked away another September, they just let him walk away – and so did everyone else.

But the Phillies are clearly in need of another veteran starter and have been said to be pursuing Blue Jays' ace Roy Halladay.
