Roy Halladay on the Block

Let the bidding begin for arguably the best pitcher in baseball. Roy Halladay is 10-2 with a 2.79 ERA for the Toronto BJays's and is 141-68 with a 3.47 career ERA. Would he not look good in Phillies Red? Toronto is 43-41, seven games back in the East and six games back in the Wildcard, behind six other teams. They also owe approximately 160 million to Alex Rios and Vernon Wells between 2010 and 2014.

Is he a rent-a-player? No, he is under contract through next year at $14.75 million this year and $15.75 million next year. Do the Phillies have a realistic shot at him? Jon Heyman from SI.com says the Yankees and the Phillies have the best shot at him, with the Angels next. That suprises me that Toronto would consider dealing him to the AL East but even if they were, I would have thought the Sox since Boston has more trade chips and a very good farm system. Ken Rosenthal from Foxsports, says the Phillies would have to give up an "untouchable" such as Dominic Brown but they also have to worry about the added salary. Toronto is said to also want a top SS prospect. Jayson Stark from ESPN is skeptical saying the Blue Jays would want 5 or 6 players plus the top 2 players in your system. Yikes! I am not willing to mortgage the entire future but would still make some offers.

I would be hesitant to deal Drabek because I think he has an Ace like future but Doc Halladay might be worth it. If the price was Dominic Brown, Jason Donald and J.A. Happ and maybe a Mayberry, the answer is Yes - though I might try to sneak Dalembert in the deal. Happ has pitched great recently but Halladay puts the Phils over the top.

  1. On Mike and Mike this morning, Buster Olney says there is "no doubt" the Phillies are in the best position to get Halladay and he thinks it is 50/50 that he will be traded. He mentioned Drabek and JA Happ. He said at least 2 top prospects and he think 3 top propects.

  2. JP Ricciardi is a moron. He is just saying this to stir things up. I will bet that Halladay never gets traded and he remains a Blue Jay.

  3. It makes sense to trade him. If he stays it will be because nobody is going to meet his asking price.

  4. NBC Sports/Rotoworld writer Matthew Pouliot examines potntial trades here is his take on a possible Phillies offer. I would rather give Mayberry than Taylor.

Phillies - RHP Kyle Drabek, RHP Carlos Carrasco, INF Jason Donald and OF Michael Taylor

Or the Blue Jays could have John Mayberry Jr. if they preferred him to Taylor. The Phillies would get to keep their top offensive prospect, Dominic Brown. The Jays could also include lefty reliever Jesse Carlson in return for the fourth prospect.

Drabek, the son of former Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, is one of the game's top 10 pitching prospects, and Carrasco is probably still in the top 20, though his stock has fallen a bit. I see Donald as a regular at second or third, though some view him as more of a utilityman. The Jays could bring him along at third as the eventual replacement for Scott Rolen. Taylor has also always received mixed reviews, but he's hitting .339/.402/.582 as a 23-year-old in Double-A right now.

  5. It would kill me to give up Drabek because I think he's going to be a star. I'd actually give up Happ before Drabek.

I don't know enough about Taylor, but I think Mayberry's stock should be pretty high right now.

  6. Yea I am not so sure about Drabek either. I mean Halladay is under contract until 2010 and then what? We will not be able to sign him going forward. If we are going to give up Drabek I would want someone that we will have for long term. Essentially you are giving up one of the top pitching prospects for a year and a half. I like the idea of Happ, "Yay Mayberry", Carrasco, and Taylor. I think that Drabek is too much.

  7. I'm not disagreeing with you but I would doubt Toronto would even talk with the Phils without Drabek involved.

  8. I agree, Toronto would laugh at the Phils if Drabek wasn't involved, and rightfully so. This is the best pitcher in baseball we're talking about, a proven Cy Young winner. A steaming poo-poo platter ain't gonna get it done.

  9. Jim Salisbury has an article in the Inqy that says they could offer Jason Knapp at Single A instead of Drabek. They can throw in Donald, Carrasco, Marson, Savery...
